Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / Hadleigh mass confirmation 20/5/1784
« on: Monday 20 December 10 01:53 GMT (UK)  »
Just using internet sources I've come across 3 people in family trees that were 'confirmed' at St Mary's , Hadleigh on 20th May 1784, they are:

Daniel Double ( who was bpt 26/7/1762 in Holton)
David Armstrong ( who was born C1759)
Hannah Rosier  d/o Robert a labourer (bpt 16/8/1767 Hitcham)

In a early Victorian book on Hadleigh it says that as confirmations by the Bishop ( ? of Ely) were so rare, that when it was planed to have such a rite performed in Hadleigh people came from all the nearby villages to participate. This source says 1507 people were confirmed that day, another souce says 38 ( quite a difference)

My question is there a list of these people still around and if so where?

Thanks
John

Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / Roger Walker in Boveny
« on: Monday 15 November 10 14:57 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have the Boveny PR?

I'm trying to trase a Roger Walker & his wife Sarah who had a son baptised 25/5/1732 and another 19/1/1735/36 both in Burnham, that's all I had on him.

But I just found on the Bucks Record Society site that on 20/4/1732 that a Roger Walker was sworn in as a petty constable in Boveny, as Burnham & Boveny are pretty close and Roger Walker is not that a common name in the area I wondered if there was any records of him in the PR 1720's to 1744.

Thanks
John

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Re: Where is Church End, Shoreditch
« on: Wednesday 03 November 10 16:35 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks Jorose,
As usual with these things, I just found a on-line Mid C18th map of Shoreditch, and as your post said Church End was a Liberty within Shoreditch, but also it seems from this map what is now Shoreditch High Steet in front of St Leonards was an actual Road called Church End, though I'm pretty sure the PR baptismal references point to the 'Liberty of Church End"

Thank again
John

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Where is Church End, Shoreditch
« on: Wednesday 03 November 10 15:04 GMT (UK)  »
I've got several ancestors as being born in the early 1700s in Church End in Shoreditch parish. While I think Church End is an area rather than a Street in Shoreditch I haven't been able to find it from maps of that era.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Kent Lookup Requests / Whitby at St Paul, Canterbury 1730's
« on: Wednesday 13 October 10 18:19 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor John Whitby who married in London in 1759 and was buried also in London in 1795 age 63 so he was born about 1732. He had a sister Elizabeth Whitby who married in London in 1761 and buried again in London in 1813 age 79, so she was born about 1734.

Using the IGI the only likely baptisms I have found for these two are from St Paul's, Canterbury:
bpt 22/4/1733 John Whitby s/o John & Elizabeth
bpt 9/2/1734 Elizabeth Whitby d/o John & Elizabeth

The IGI has no other Whitby's in the first half of the 18th century in Kent.

My question is are there any burial records of Whitbys about this time at St Pauls, and is there any more info in the PR , such as the father's occupation?

Thanks
John

London and Middlesex / Re: Remarriage to the same person?
« on: Wednesday 26 May 10 14:31 BST (UK)  »
Thanks Valda & Deb D, there was nothing in either PR entries to indicate if Ann was under 21, nor have I yet been able to find her or Ralph's burial, so cannot guess their ages from that either.

In the first marriage in 20/4/1757 at St Andrew by the Wardrobe it is indicated they were both from the parish of St Ann , Blackfriars, but as St Ann was burned down in 1666 and never rebuilt, St Andrew kept a double set of PRs as it were to handle both parishes, I wondered if there was something 'dodgy' about this as the banns were published 12,19,26 December 1756 four months earlier.

Anyway thanks for your help
Best

London and Middlesex / Remarriage to the same person?
« on: Wednesday 26 May 10 02:33 BST (UK)  »
In tracing my London ancestors I think I have come across 2 seperate couples who seemed to have married twice:

Ralph Reader as a widower otp married Ann Margery Harding as a spinster otp
20/4/1757 at St Andrew by the wardrobe &
22/11/1762 at St Katherine by the Tower
in each case there were 2 seperate pairs of witnesses

The other one is less conclusive:
bpt 6/1/1765 George Joseph Mortieau s/o Joseph & Martha, St Mary Lambeth
bpt 7/5/1766 Lewis Mortieau s/o Joseph & Martha St Stephen, Coleman St
M. 29/6/1766 Joseph Mortieau bach, otp=Martha Meighan spin, otp St Stephen, Coleman St.

I wondered if anyone has any ideas why couples would remarry?

Thanks
John

Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / civil death records for Jersey
« on: Sunday 11 April 10 23:53 BST (UK)  »
I am going to visit Jersey in late June, and among other things I would like to look up the civil death record of 2 relatives, one who's death is in the 5/1892-12/1893 St Helier death index, and the other in the 9/1893-8/1905 Grouville death index.

My question is are both these records available in St Helier, if so where do I go to find them?

Thanks
John
