A big thank you to all the advice, it has given me something to pursue; I have access to Ancestry at my local library, plus living in Yorkshire I might be able to access parish records; should keep me busy for awhile!
best wishes

Thank you both for your interest. Yes, I found the surname on the IGI for the marriage to Benjamin Whitehead. Interesting that you can't find a Bredrie in Scottish census for later years. I will check census forms with Ancestry if her family maybe moved to England with her.and if so do their details reveal more info about birthplaces. What ever the outcome of my research, I'm so pleased to find out I have some Scottish blood in me and it might help explain why I have been drawn to the western highlands on holidays for many years!!
best wishes

Elizabeth Bredrie, born abt 1801, is my Gt Grandmother/ 3. The only info I have about her is that she moved to Yorkshire and married Benjamin Whitehead in 1822; she gives her birthplace on census forms as Edinburgh. Can anyone suggest ways I could develop her family tree? This is the first relative I have found from north of the border and the web sites I have used to date seem to only detail English records. Thanks

Hello Goz 66, thanks for the useful info;I'm guessing the branch of the Young family tree of Giggleswick spreads far and wide!

Thanks everyone for the interest. I have the birth certificate of Henry Young which shows mother as Ellen but no named father. On Hnery's marriage certificate, he gives his father's name as John Young; I'm assuming this is Ellen's brother who stood in as proxy for a missing father, but I could be wrong!

Lancashire / Young family of Accrington

Ellen Young was born in Gigleswick in 1826 and moved to Accrington sometime between 1851-1861. She had 6 children subsequent to the move ; Isabella b1857 Francis W b1859 John b 1861 Alfred & Mary b1863 and Francis H b 1866., all children have the surname Young. The census shows no male in the household and I am trying to establish who is the father(s) of her children. My great grandfather Henry Young was the illegitimate son of Ellen b 1851 when Ellen lived in Giggleswick and was left with grandparents when Ellen moved. Ellen died 12 Jan 1900 in Darwen. Has anyone researched this family tree, can you help with more information about the family?
thanks

Thanks everyone for your observations, sounds like he was probably born in Atherton but I notice his wife Ann Dawkin was from Rochdale.
The dawkin side of my family has proved difficult to research as I have only got back to Thomas Henry Dawkin born abt 1862-65; he says he was born in Keighley on all census records from 1881 but there is no trace of his birth in civil records or parish records in Keighley. He married on 1 Feb 1887 (Sutton on the Forest) and gives his father's name as Thos Henry Dawkin dec'd on the marriage certificate. The Thomas Dawkin born abt 1810 was 71 at the 1881 census and as a hawker, he maybe moved around en route from Atherton to Sheffield. To date I have been unable to find any info to confirm he is my great grandfather's father or otherwise. I'll keep on trying.
Season's greetings to all

I am trying to establish if Thos Dawkin born abt 1810 is my great great grandfather. On the 1881 census (he is living in Sheffield occupation hawker) he gives his birth place as "Show Bent Lancs" but I can't find this village/town on the map. Does anyone know the location?  As yet, I have been unable to track him down on the census for any other year. Thanks
