Occupation Interests / Re: Occupation query on 1838 marriage certificate
« on: Sunday 07 January 07 09:46 GMT (UK)  »
Thank both of you.
I had wondered about Brass Founder but the letter looks so much like an f that I thought it couldn't be.
Sheila's explanation makes perfect sense - well as much as writing fs instead of ss can  ;)
I'll check out that site Sheila - looks like it will be useful.

Thanks again,
Bev

Occupation Interests / Occupation query on 1838 marriage certificate
« on: Sunday 07 January 07 01:22 GMT (UK)  »
I've just received an 1838 marriage cert showing my ancestor's father's occupation as something like 'Brafs Founder'. I just can't figure out what on earth this might be  :-\

My ancestor was a tailor according to the later censuses (haven't found him in 1841 yet), and some of his children became tailors.
On the marriage cert his wife's father is a tailor.
Also, the cert lists both bride and groom as living in High Street, Leeds. He was born in Middlesex and  she was born in Durham. But they appear in Yorkshire on and off during their lives, the rest of the time they are in Middlesex.

I don't know whether any of the above info helps shed any light. But any ideas would be graefully received.

Thanks
Bev

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Re: 1841 Leeds Lookup for LEVITT please
« on: Saturday 06 January 07 23:57 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for this - but I think I need to do some more investigation !

I'm pretty sure that William was born in Middlesex and Ann was born in Durham. William was a tailor by 1851 although may not have been in 1841. Their marriage certificate shows Ann's father was a tailor - so maybe William learnt the trade from him at some later point.

Also, they moved about quite a lot - Leeds to Middlesex (various places) and then to Eccleshill in Yorkshire then back down south to Harrow before disappearing on me !

The above is based on other census info but maybe I have taken a wrong tack somewhere along the line - I need to check my logic again.

Thanks again,
Bev

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / 1841 Leeds Lookup for LEVITT please
« on: Saturday 06 January 07 21:13 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help?

I am trying to find William LEVITT (born about 1818) and his wife Ann who married in 1838 in Leeds. Residence on the marriage certificate says High Street for both of them.

But I cannot find them on Ancestry in the 1841 census.

Any help appreciated
Thanks

Thanks for taking the time to look- it's very kind of you.
Everything about this Butler family has been difficult to find- so this doesn't surprise me!

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Richard SHARMAN - born approx 1740, Dronfield
« on: Saturday 18 March 06 10:20 GMT (UK)  »
I have been tracing my Sharman ancestors and have got back to the mid 1700s in Sutton-cum-Duckmanton, Derbyshire. I know there is another strand of Sharmans in the vicinity which I suspect are related but have not yet found the link. I suspect a generation further back may provide the key.

From IGI - I have a Richard Sharman b 1741 and Isabell Booer b 1745 both born in Sutton-cum-Duckmanton. But these are submitted to the site by an individual so I am a bit dubious about the accuracy of the info.

From a lookup on the Sutton-cum-Duckmanton parish register - I have confirmation they married in 1766 but no baptism for either of them.

I have rechecked IGI and have a christening for a Richard Sharman on 1st November 1740 in Dronfield, father John Sharman with a film reference number.
But I am unclear how much confidence to place on this information. I guess the fact that someone has transcribed it from a film provides more confidence that the data actually exists but I have no idea how accurate these transcriptions are.

Any help would be much appreciated,

Thanks
Bev

Jan,

Sorry - I should have mentioned that one of Matthew's children was not baptised until 16 years after her birth which made her a problem to find. I hope this doesn't prove to be a family trait   :-\

Thanks again,
Bev

Thanks Jan - much appreciated.

I'm afraid I can't really add anything to what I've already told you that would help locate him except to say that given he changed his mind about where he was born, I don't hold out too much hope for accuracy on his age either.
Although, to be fair,  it's only the death that would suggest he was born a few years earlier - and it is possible I have the wrong death, but I don't think so.

He married someone called Elizabeth who was born 1803 according to the 1841 census. I don't think I've found all their children yet, but the earliest child I've got was Ann born 1825 and the latest is Rececca born 1846. All the children were born in Overton as far as I can tell. Elizabeth died in 1849.

Thanks again,
Bev

Shropshire / Matthew BUTLER b. approx 1804 Ellesmere
« on: Thursday 16 March 06 22:57 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help please ?

I am trying to track down Matthew BUTLER b approx 1804 - according to the 1841 and 51 censuses he was born in Iscoyd, Denbighshire and lived in Overton, Flintshire. But lookups in both locations have failed to find him.

But then on the 1861 census he claims to have been born in Ellesmere.
Also, there is a likely death for him in 1866 but that suggests he was born in 1800.

Any help or guidance would be much appreciated,

Thanks
Bev
