Antrim / Re: John McNEILL - who's his father?
« on: Thursday 14 March 24 03:09 GMT (UK)  »
When John applied to enter the Civil Service in 1867, his birth date is given as 02 Nov 1848 and his father's name is recorded as Daniel McNEILL.

....

Could you pl  provide a link to the application to join the Civil Service in 1867 or provide a copy.  Does it give any indication that he will be joining to be a sailor?  Where did he join?
Then 8 years later the occupation on the marriage certificate is 'sailor'

An Andrew dies in Belfast in 1874, he was a railway labourer and his death was accidental & subject to a coroner's inquest.  His wife's name was Mary and she was present at the death at 86 Hardinge St Belfast

Not sure how far you've got with the NZ end.

There is a fabulous museum at Waipu where there was a large Scottish migration, some via Nova Scotia.

Good Morning Everyone,

Thank you for all your inputs for which I am extremely grateful.   Certainly we are talking about the correct person, criminal record, Canada etc.

Galway seems to be the general consensus and I am more than happy to agree.   Pity it can't be narrowed to a particular parish.

Thank you all once again.

Gives us time BAC3, we're still on the job...never say never....... ;D

I can’t see any baptism records in Galway and none of the family declare anything but Ireland in censuses.

It looks as though he emigrated to Canada soon afte4 his marriage.

I think the OP's 'family' was long gone from Ireland when they emigrated to Canada via England

Here is a Patrick Ruberry from Co Kildare showing on FS
Death Registration  from July 1914 to September 1914
Oughterard, County Kildare, Ireland
Birth  September 1834

Not saying this is any relation. On FS there are entries from Co Galway & Co Kildare for a variety of Rubery names.

My brain is not working at the moment and I am having difficulty finding alternatives to the name Rubery.

What are the alternatives in spelling that you or the family have found.

Where is the family located now?

ETA On Family Search I have found a patrick Rubery in Canada born variously in 1843/1846.
On the 1901 census he has a wife Annie and children Maud & Ellen.  Is this him?

ETA2 Then a series of births (martin, john Christopher to a Patrick and a Judy/Julia  joyce from Oughterard in Co Galway

ETA3 I see the name may also be spelt Rubarry

Marriage Certificate for john White and Mary Hickey
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1869/11416/8192878.pdf

This shows that William White was deceased at the time that the wedding took place in 1869, or that his son said he was.
have you checked the witnesses to see if there is any family connection Con Curtien/ian/etc and Catherine O'Brien
John White says he was from Ballingarry at the time of the marriage, in Tipperary? There are several  I think
https://www.townlands.ie/search/?q=ballingarry
Mary Hickey is from Charleville

For us to help could you pl supply a bit more information.

1 William White (my 3rd great grandfather) married Anna Shea from Limerick as far as I know. Could you expand pl does this mean that you think /know William White was from Limerick also? or that Anna Shea was from Limerick and William White was from another County? ETA Where did they live after thier marriage?

2 Their son John White married Mary Hickey ( she was from Cork) 9 Feb 1869  Again does this mean both were from Cork or only Mary Hickey?

3 Pl supply the names of the children, in date order of John White & Mary Hickey. We may be able to glean some thing when looking at these and Irish naming patterns.

Have you checked

Family search
Census records

ETA Did all these events happen in Ireland?

I wonder what the 'domestic troubles' were that caused the applicant to leave? Canada.
