Keith,

Once you have your selection on a new layer, click on the layer to make it the active one.

Thenyou can use any of the adjustments from the '
image - adjustments' menu. So you can change the colour balance and then the brightness/contrast, etc. There is no limit to how many changes you can make.

Keith,

I tend to copy a selection to a new layer (look in the layer menu).
This means that it becomes a separate selection which you can apply endless adjustments to.

You can also throw it all away, if your changes  goes pear-shaped without affecting the original.

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: Incorrect Census transcriptions on Ancestry
« on: Friday 21 October 05 22:38 BST (UK)  »
I've just found in the 1861 census on Ancestry, records for people living in Norwich where the birthplace has been given as Norway.

The original image shows the enumerator has used an abbreviation which looks like 'Norw'

There's 1136 of them.... :o

Norfolk Lookup Requests / 1841/1851 lookup - Jabez Crotch
« on: Tuesday 18 October 05 23:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Could someone check the 1841 and 1851 censuses please for JABEZ CROTCH

There is actually more than one such person:
I have an entry from the 1861 census for Jabez Crotch b 1830, Norwich. He is married to Anne (b 1831) and has a daughter Anna (b 1853).

I also have an entry from IGI and 1881 census for Jabez Crotch b 1832/1834 in Norwich, married to Sarah (b1846).

I also have two death records for Jabez Crotch, one in 1859 in Norwich and one in 1898 in Bradford.

Any details of parents or other family for either of these two would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Adrian

The Common Room / Re: Annotation on census page

Yes, I had wondered if it was to do with the 'J' but I can't help think the scribble is more JORDIN than JORDAN, especially as Levi appears as Jordin elsewhere...

Can anyone explain an oddity on a census return for 1871, please.

The reference is
       RG10/2810 folio 73 page 4
and I'm interested in the entry for Levi JORDAN, aged 59 born Highley

(Image attached ... hopefully :) )

Although the surname appears to have been recorded as JORDAN there is a small scribble next to it, which seems to be 'JORDIN'.

Can anyone tell if this was roughly contemporary with the original entry, and if so is it a correction of the surname, or something else entirely?

Many thanks,

Adrian
