Hi AnnClare,

Thank you for your help with this query of mine.

I really appreciate your suggestions and will use them as starting points for my search. I particularly appreciate the level of detail you provided - it's so helpful for a newcomer to Irish places.

Thanks again,

Debra

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: 1851 & 1861 Lancashire Census
« on: Thursday 05 June 08 05:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi Pegasuss,

Thank you for taking the time to search for my John McAllister - I'm sorry that he wasn't a nice straightforward search  :(

The 1851 record sounds promising, though of course, that would be the one record that is miss-transcribed  ::)  At least it gives me hope that he may be out there somewhere, I just need to spend a bit more time to find where he is hiding.

As for the 1861 results I'm a little concerned that it gives the John McAllister as being born in Scotland. Of course you would expect a McAllister to come from north of the border but mine was supposed to have been born in England. Oh well, it gives me something to think about.

Thank you so much for your help and for taking the time to look up this information for me. It is much appreciated.

Regards,

Debra

Tipperary / Location Query
« on: Thursday 05 June 08 01:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

While researching a new family line I came across the following location given as the birthplace for my John COSTELLO.

Borraschill, Tipperary, Ireland

I can't find any location with this name, but given that the name was written down in New Zealand in the mid-late 1800's, the spelling is likely to be somewhat suspicious.

Does anyone recognise the name and know where it is or have any ideas of what it should be?

Kind regards,

Debra

Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1851 & 1861 Lancashire Census
« on: Thursday 05 June 08 01:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

If anyone has access to the 1851 & 1861 Census records for Lancashire I would greatly appreciate a look-up.

I'm looking for John McALLISTER - or two of them to be precise.  ;)

The information that I have to work from is:

Name: John McALLISTER
Born: circa 1842, probably in Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Father: John McALLISTER, possibly warehouseman

I was hoping that these two may show up in the 1851 Census where John Jnr would have been around 9 years of age. I know that John Jnr left England for New Zealand around 1863 so he would have hopefully been covered in the 1861 census as well.

If anyone would mind having a look for these two, it would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Debra

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Bradford Birth & Marriage Look-Up Request
« on: Wednesday 06 June 07 23:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone had access to Bradford Parish Records and would be able to have a look for a record or two for me?

I'm trying to find the birth and marriage records for my 3x great grandparents - James VICKERS and his wife Esther (nee MARSDEN).

According to the census records I've found, James VICKERS was born circa 1791, most likely in or around Bowling, Bradford. His wife Esther MARSDEN was born circa 1793 and probably in the same rough area.

According to the IGI, they were married on 19 March 1810 in Bradford, Yorkshire, but I was really hoping that there may be some more information in the original records as I'm trying to make my way back another generation.

If anyone is able to help it would be much appreciated. It's a little too far for me to travel from New Zealand to Bradford in the hope of finding these records, so if anyone closer has access to them and wouldn't mind helping out, I'd really appreciate it.

Kind regards,

Debra

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Anyone visiting Essex Record Office?

Hi Tick_Tock

Sorry, but none of those first names feature in my Smyth family line.

My line passes down through numerous Sir Robert Smyths then Sir George Henry Smyth of Berechurch Hall. If you have a link with this family then I've gathered quite a bit of information I'd be happy to share with you. If not, then good luck with your search.

Regards,

Debbie

Hi again,

I've just discovered that the 1841 census records for Angus are available online thanks to the lovely people at FreeCEN.org.uk.

I still have my fingers crossed that there are some others out there somewhere.

Cheers,

Debra

Scotland / Scottish census lookups anyone?
« on: Wednesday 24 May 06 02:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

After parting with my money remarkably quickly at ScotlandsPeople, I made some great progress on finding new relations (aren't those Scottish marriage certificates amazing!!)  but I ran out of credits before getting to the census records. Converting New Zealand dollars into pounds is a bit painful so I wondered if anyone had access to any Scottish Census records from any other source?

I have the names of relations I'd be interested in finding in every Scottish census from 1841 onwards, so if there is any lovely person out there who has access to any census records I would love to hear from you. My main area of interest at the moment is the Angus district of Scotland but I also have interests in Aberdeen.

Thanks in advance,

Debra

Hi Debbie,

Thanks for clearing up the meaning of journeyman for me. You'd think I would know by now not to assume that a word like journeyman automatically meant anything to do with travel. Doh  ::)

Now, thanks to that bit of information, the job description makes a bit more sense. The first two words are the job title and the third word describes the level at which he was working.

I'll have to save up my small change and try to buy some more credits for ScotlandsPeople and see if I can find this fellow on the relevant census images. It might just clear things up.

Thanks heaps,

Debra
