Seen that marriage Sandra  ??? I think if Velky gets one of the birth certificates after 1906  it will confirm if it's right;)

Yep, I have the birth certificate for my grandfather, Lewis Beddie Scott. Father Alexander Scott, Mother Joan Scott (nee Ogston), married 5th December 1906 in Lowestoft. Death? Marriage? Difference?  ;D

Aberdeenshire / SCOTT Family - Fraserburgh
« on: Wednesday 11 April 18 19:51 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information about the family of Alexander Scott and his wife Joan Robb Ogston.

I know that they had 7 sons:
  • Alexander
  • John
  • Lewis (1909-1978) married Mary Cassie - my grandfather
  • William
  • James
  • Charles
  • Gordon
I don't know much about my great uncles beyond the bits and pieces my mother has told me, if anyone has information about them, or is descended from them, I would love to know.

One question, is this Gordon Scott the same Gordon Scott as played for Fraserburgh FC at the same time as my grandfather?

Aberdeenshire / Re: Isabella aka CADGER-OGSTON-SCOTT
« on: Monday 09 April 18 19:30 BST (UK)  »
His mother appears to be Isabella SCOTT, daughter of Isabella CADGER who married William OGSTONE....... if the certificates are at least correct in that part, it seems Isabella (SCOTT) and later her son, both used surnames of their fathers - event though both were, each in their turn, illigitimately born.

Alexander PITTENDREIGH - b abt 1848/49
His marriage certificate seems to quite clearly indicate his parents, Alexander PITTENDREIGH & Isabella SCOTT were not married (to each other). Yet he has used his father's surname.

Alexander's  death certificate, may be mis-informed that his mother was married PITTENDREIGH ms OGSTON or that his parents were married at all. The inormation seems to be a cobbling of a few separate part truths. Perhaps the informant  partially mixed up his mother and his maternal grandmother, or was simply under the false impression that what he/she informed was correct.

It seems that Isabella SCOTT's death certificate is mostly correctly informed - does it say her mother is "CADGER or OGSTON" or does it say "ms OGSTON"? (I can't quite make it out). It appears she also used her father's surname even though her mother was unmarried at the time she was born.   The Census seems to indicate, William OGSTON was her stepfather, and CADGER was her mother's (probable) maiden name (probable,  because her mother is shown with the CADGER  surname in 1841). Wonder who the GORDON laddie is though....

If my research is correct, the Elizabeth Ogston I have highlighted here is my great-great grandmother. Her daughter Joan (b.1873) married Alexander Scott (b.1873) and had 7 sons, including my grandfather Lewis Scott, who from what I have read was something of a jack of all trades in his native Fraserburgh. He played for Fraserburgh FC when they won the Highland League in 1932-33; played cricket for Fraserburgh in the Buchan League; was the youngest member of the Town Council when he served from 1937-1946; he pops up constantly in the Fraserburgh Herald and Norther Counties' Advertiser on the BNA website.

Question is, does anyone know who Joan's father was?

James Cassie, eldest son of William Cassie and Marjory reid, was born at Auchnamoon in 1752. He was twice married. He is the great-great grandfather of George Cassie, Backhill of Auchnagorth. On February 2nd, 1794, James Cassie married Isobel Pirie. They had two children, Margaret and James. Before 1784, James Cassie is tenant of Yonder Auchnagorth. He married secondly, Elizabeth Kiloh. They had sons John, William, Andrew, George, Robert, Adam, Alexander, David, and daughters Annie and May.
George, the 4th son of the second marriage, born about 1805, had a son james born at Bogfern, King-Edward in 1827. He married Jane, daughter of Robert Lawson and Jane Porter, Mains of Fisherie. They were the parents of Robert Lawson Cassie, author of six books of verse, born at Hill of Logie, Gamrie, in 1859. David, the youngest son of the second marriage, born about 1819, was grieve at the Home Farm, Meldrum House. He removed to Backhill of Auchnagorth, and was succeeded by his son, David, whose wife was Isabella Webster. David Cassie died April 1920, aged 84, Isabella Webster died January 1915, aged 75. Their son George Cassie bought the Backhill, 32 acres, and the neighbouring holdings of Basilhill, 40 acres, the croft of Corthiemoss, 7 acres, and Cowieshillock, 26 acres, from Colonel Garden Duff of Hatton. His wife Elizabeth Bruce, was born at Stephensburn, new Deer. A son Adam resdies at Hillhead, Ellon. Mr Cassie now aged 74, is a worthy son of a distinguished ancestry, he is a type of Scottish farmer that has brought credit to the industry. He is ably assisted by his daughter Margaret, and by his son and grandson, both named George.

This was published in 1952.

Superb amount of knowledge there! Thank you so much for sharing!!

These extracts are from James Godsman's book on King Edward.

"Lower Auchnamoon.......... In 1750, William Cassie and Marjory Reid assumed the tenancy. He was the son of Alexander Cassie and Margaret Pyper, Easter Melrose."

"Yonder Auchnagorth......... Before 1740, the tenant is George Hynd. James Cassie, born at Auchnamoon in 1752, succeeded George Hynd before 1784. He died at Auchnagorth about 1812. His second wife Elizabeth Kiloh, described as "a handsome and powerful woman," resided at Auchnagorth for many years. She was assisted by her second son William, who in 1866 was succeeded by William Chalmers...."

The book states that Alexander Cassie, tenant of Jackstown, moved to Easter Melrose (both in Gamrie) before 1708. His wife was Margaret, daughter of James Reid in Crovie. They had children, James, Alexander, Isobel and Anna. Alexander Cassie senior died 21-1-1730 (gravestone at King Edward). Alexander Cassie junior married Margaret Pyper, daughter of John Pyper in Oldtown of Melrose. They had children, William, Peter and Mary. William went to Auchnamoon, Byth. His wife was Marjory Reid. They had sons, James and William.

Let me know if you want the complete text.

The complete text would be great! Thanks

And as a footnote - the primary link into my own family is via Mary Philip, wife of James Cassie and Elizabeth Killoh’s son Alexander. Mary Philip’s brother, Thomas Philip, married my 2nd cousin, 6x removed, Christian Lawrence.

Phew  ;D

Ruth

That is a phenomenal amount of information! Thank you very much. I guess we are distantly related then as Mary Philip was my 3x great grandmother.

Europe / John Reese - Minden
« on: Monday 14 August 17 19:54 BST (UK)  »
My 3x great grandfather was John Reese, who from what I have been able to piece together came to mainland Britain from Jersey in around 1880, with his wife Eliza, and the first three of their children, including my 2x great grandfather George John Reece.

According to various trees I have seen, John came originally from Minden in Prussia, born in 1830 (or 1833) to  Wilhelm Friedrich Christian Reese and Caroline Charlotte Steineke.

At some point John left Minden to join the British military, he is listed in Jersey as a military pensioner, and I think he may have joined the British German Legion to fight in Crimea.

What is unexplained to me at the moment is John's birth name. In English he went by the name John William Reese, so Johann Wilhelm would seem logical, but I can't find anything about such a person in Minden.

If anyone can help that would be fantastic.

Are you sure of the names of those children?

I got those names from my dad, so I can check with him. The one I am certain about is Catherine, as I met her at my grandmother's funeral, when I also met Bill.
