Edward Duffy born 1883 married Marguerite Elsie Simpson in 1907 4Q Salford. Children Mary Ruth Duffy born 1909 & Edward Duffy born 1910. They lived at 38 Amos Street, Langworthy, Pendleton, Salford.

Thank you Ellenmai

As I mentioned I had either Rose Ann Dodd (1903) or Marguerite Simpson 1907 as possibilities. Can I ask how you feel Marguerite is the wife as opposed to Rose. Both married Edwards.
?

Appreciate the help.

Family History Beginners Board / Duffy Family - Help needed to move onwards.
« on: Monday 16 July 18 13:09 BST (UK)  »
Most of my branches are developing well and have born interesting fruit.

However, my father's bloodline remains elusive to progress (well - for me at the moment). I have had a previous post to help my ggf John 1857 ' brickwall ' and the advice from those helping was to obtain his first marriage certificate, which I was able to do ( I copied it to my original post). That gave his father's name - Edward but armed with this, I have still been unable to 'leap forward'.

Another thought was to develop John's children with a view that that may be easier and release some new information from another angle. But his children's records also seem very elusive (to me).

I currently have these details for the family:

Edward (father of John from the Marriage Certificate of John and Mary Hawthorn 1882 Salford)

John (previous post will show there are 2 possibilities for birth ?) 1857. I know he was born Lloughlyn, County Roscommon, Ireland from Census info.

First Marriage 1882 Mary Hawthorn(e) - Confirmed with actual marriage cert ordered/rec'd

Children:

Edward 1883 - Marriage possibilities two - Rose Ann Dodd 1903 (8d 181), Marguerite Simpson 1907 (8d 219) ?

James   1885 - Marriage possibly to Mary Agnes Derbyshire but I believe she was born in Germany and I can find no further information as to whether Derbyshire is Maiden or previous marriage name or Wedding citation to James.
John     1887 - Little found
Charles 1889 - Little found
William Henry 1891 - Little found

& Joseph 1893 (my grandfather)

I have been able to confirm all the above on GRO with Hawthorn as MMN.

1891 Census shows them all (apart from Joseph) BUT transcribed as Hawthorn(e) as surname NOT Duffy.

I have trawled through the transcribed Ordsall (I believe they resided), Salford Parish Church records to confirm Baptisms but all notes on these just give John & Mary as parents. http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Salford/

I am not coming from this from a specific person point of view. Could anyone find a bit more information or citation/record proof for any of these ancestors ? One piece may unlock my ability to shuffle forward with the others in family or indeed 'unlock' the Duffy Family Ireland to Salford era brickwall.

I utilise Family Search which does not yield anything for my searches on these individuals. I also use FreeBMD and GRO. I am not on Ancestry or similar due to cost.

Always amazed and grateful at what is found by the members :)

Thank you

The Common Room / Re: How best to Record Surname Spellings

Thank you everyone for your replies.

I accept names are spelt differently (part of the fun of the search ...sometimes but sometimes not !!) and indeed, how names 'morph' over the years is interesting. Some of you appear to have much more of a challenge than I - the more letters in a family surname the more variations.!!

Then of course there are 'ages' haha - best bet is most of my illiterate ancestors randomly chose a number at the census time - perhaps they were all older at death than we imagine :)

Given my question - no one has shouted 'you heathen' in the replies :) - so I will record my tree using one spelling whilst citing the variants in notes which is how I decided early on. It was just a nagging thought that there may have been an 'accepted process' for recording hence my question.

As always, grateful for input from the members - it all helps as I find my ancestors.

Interested in views, which may be individual and diverse, but wondering if there is an 'etiquette'.

In earlier ancestry searches it appears that forenames (sometimes) and surnames (many times) are spelt slightly differently in records.

An example for my line is Mayberry - Maybery/Maybury/Maiberry/Maibery.

As I am recording a Family Tree I have found myself taking 'one spelling' and keeping it consistent in the tree. So my first location of the above surname was Mayberry so I have altered all linked spellings (to my tree) to read Mayberry. The attached citations show the spellings as given but I just like order :)

It doesn't affect 'world order' but is there an etiquette amongst historians of family trees that I breach?

Is this the PR you are looking for?

County    Monmouthshire
Place (with link)    Monmouth
Church name    St Mary the Virgin
Register type     Parish Register
Marriage date    05 Sep 1782
Groom forename    Edward
Groom surname    JONES
Groom parish    Monmouth
Bride forename    Mary
Bride surname    JONES
Bride parish    Monmouth
Notes    License

Jones in Wales you have an uphill struggle to find the right Jone's, om so far as pregnant before marriage it is very likely many married carrying their first child...so things have never really been any different, couples just choose not to marry now a days

Thanks Iluleah

That's the record I requested. However I am thinking that Ciderdrinker's find of marriage records for Maiberry & Jones is a more likely fit now than the hope that Jones & Jones was down to a transcription err.

Am grateful for you giving the details tho' :)

And yes - I am somewhat 'nervous' of the prospect of progressing a 'Jones' line in Wales BUT am hoping that Jones can't be spelt in many different ways as Mayberry and alike haha.

Hello
Esther is baptised at Chapel Hill ,the first of three children.
This looks like her parents marriage at Newchurch st Peter
Edward Maiberry of Chapel hill 27.5.1782 to Mary Jones of Newchurch.
Bach and spinster by banns.
ps Freereg transcription has James not Jones for Mary the bride.

It does look like the transcripter muggled things up a bit.
Mary would still be pregnant though.

Ciderdrinker

Thanks Ciderdrinker

I believe this could well be the detail I seek. I searched Mayberry and also Maybury but not aware of Maiberry as a version, which I will now add to my searches moving earlier into history.

Can also see a theme being created as Edward & Marys daughter, Esther, married James Powell (Powell being my mothers paternal line). Esther Capel Hill - James was born Newchurch.

Marriage slightly earlier in the year ie May also 'helps' the fact Esther was born in the same year.

Great help. Many Thanks

Family line: Mayberry, Chapel Hill, Monmouthshire, Wales

Esther Mayberry 1782 - 1824 >>>

Edward Mayberry 1758 (Father) married Mary Jones (mother).

I am seeking clarity on records regarding Edward / Mary. FamilySearch arrives with little and again I am not able to use premium sites.

Searching I have located a marriage citation for Mary Jones to an Edward Jones 5th Sept 1782 in Monmouthshire, Wales which would fit my thoughts on the marriage.

Esther was born 1782 (although being Sept Mary would have been pregnant if this was the marriage for my family - that doesn;t fit with the 'usual remit' of marriage the year before child).

I cannot find records online to read an entry and confirm if it may have been transcribed incorrectly ie Edward Jones instead of Edward Mayberry.

A bit of a brickwall which needs a fresh pair of eyes cause i'm spinning :)

Would be grateful for anothers investigatory skills or ability to sight entry through another source not available to me.

To clarify : Esther's details are good / Edward as father is confirmed, the rest is investigation findings at the moment.

Thanks

Maybe Mary in 1871
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VBJ9-48J

ADDED Maureen you beat me to the 1881 as well  ;D

Lets all sit down guys as info fitting together !! lol

On this census James Hawthorne (Marys Dad) is a .................dyer which was information I was working on :) Although there was a big Dye Factory in Offord Lane, Manchester around the time so probably the main employ.

Still good.

Can't see a birth reg for Mary but there is this baptism on the familysearch website which would fit with the above 1871 census:

Date: 2nd Aug 1857
Place: St Phillip Salford Lancaster
Name: Mary Hawthorn
Parents: James and Betsy Hawthorn
Abode: 9 Eliza Street Hulme
Father's occ: Dyer

Thank you Candrjm.

This is brilliant and really appreciate you looking and finding.

I believe it fits well. As I mentioned in previous post with Wedding Cert - both John and Mary state 24yrs in 1882 (so 1857 fits). Marys mother is Elizabeth so Betsy fits and we know James worked in the Ordsall Lane, Manchester Dye Factory.

I will add the info.

Do find it strange that Mary's birth not located as yet nor her death. John Duffy (husband) married again 1898 ((Elizabeth) Maiden Name: Holyoak - American citizen) but my Father remembers my grandfather stating he preferred one of his mums to the other (ie Nicer I presume). My grandfather Joseph 1883 was the sixth and final child in John/Mary's marriage. So on the basis of that recollection it appears to me that Joseph knew BOTH mums.

Will keep searching but with your help and others on this fine site - I am progressing.

:)  :)
