« on: Monday 16 September 19 20:54 BST (UK)  »
hi all
Just downloaded my grandfathers WW1 seamans awards card. most of it is quite self explanatory but I was wondering what M.M.O stands for, would it be Mercantile Marine Office ?

Occupation Interests / Merchant Navy Previous Ship - abbreviation of name Gwr

Hi All

Looking for my grandfather and found this in the crew listing for the SS St David WW1 Hospital ship.

Francis Hugh Prior; rank/rating, Seaman; age, 35; place of birth, Derry; previous ship, Gwr.

https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C14740191

All the crew have the same abbreviation for their previous ship Gwr

apart from it being the Great Western Railway, anyone have any ideas as what it could be.

Thanks Mick

Hello Hugh

my mum told me that when her mum died (1929), her and her brother were put into a children's home  so that her dad could continue at sea thats all all I know about his continued service at sea. I think he may have become a trawler-man/fisherman though.

Hello again cathy and Hugh. This is my Grandfathers seamans card. Would he have had a CR1 and CR2 ? it only goes up to 1921 but he was at sea a long time after that. Would he have other records in the BT series?

Thanks Mick

Thanks for the prompt info Cathy and  Hugh. I’ve got quite a few uncles who were merchant seamen, looks like a trip to Kew is on the cards(excuse the pun😁)

Hi all
would I be right in thinking that the list of numbers on my Uncles MN service card is list of the ships numbers he served on.
Thanks Mick

thanks Brentor Boy.
The problem I have is trying to work out where /what the general was. This is in 1787 and even today Burgh is a small village. Lots of entries in the register refer to the General which I cant imagine was a General Hospital in Burgh and its a bit of a cart ride to Norwich if this is where the hospital was, also this is the first time I've seen mention of the word General in parish registers.
