Essex / Can anybody find James Bradford?
« on: Tuesday 01 April 14 15:22 BST (UK)  »
I found a newspaper report but cannot find James Bradford on the 1871 or 1881 Census?
Is it significant that James was a farmer in Prittlewell and owed money to Eastwood??

Chelmsford Chronicle, Friday 18 July 1879. Rochford. James Bradford of Prittlewell a farmer was summoned for non-payment of poor rate amounting to three pounds for the parish of Eastwood district, A warrant was issued.

The only baptism I have is;
James Bradford bap 13 Sep 1840 s of Matthew (Lab) and Ann at Southchurch. SEAX

The only other possibility was also a boy named James Bradford on the 1851 census s of Thomas and Sarah but on other census he was named as John Bradford born 1839 Canewdon and also registered as John in 1839 Rochford Apr-Jun vol 12 page 189

Further to my original Post I have found that;
In 1881. Mary Ann Bradford born 1853 in Canewdon the daughter of Thomas 1828 Barling on the was Mary Ann Bacon a widow living 2 Holly Cott Coleman Str, living with Mathew Bradford born 1826 Gt Wakering and his second wife Lucy. Mathew’s son Moses Bradford born 1855 Gt Wakering is at number 4 Holly Cotts. (His other son was Moses Edwin)

Mary Ann Bradford 1853 parents were Thomas and Mary Ann who married 1854. (I have no record of her having a brother Mathew in 1834). As Mathew was born in 1826 I think he was unlikely to be her brother and not her father.

Mathew and Ann married in 1826 their last child born in 1840. Their children were born in South church / Shoebury / Wakering area.
Mary Ann 1853 was born in Canewdon as were the younger children of Thomas Bradford 1828.

Mathew Bradford 1834 N Shoebury was the son of Thomas Bradford 1805 and Sarah Ann Carriage. His sister Mary Ann was born in 1841 at Canewdon and was married to John Bines in 1881.

Mathew Bradford 1826 Gt Wakering (I think) was the son of  Mathew Bradford 1801 and Ann Neal.

Bedfordshire / Re: Green families farming in the Bolnhurst area. Were they related?

Hi Perthman
My interest is Sabey , Elms and White. I have looked at the other families out of interest and wondered who looked after 'my' Francis Sabey after his mother died in 1774.

John Sabey was probably Francis' grandfather and John Lawson owned John's farm

From the 1750 census there was a non-conformists John Saby, farmer, of Backenhoo House. His landlord was John Lawson & the rent was £45.00. 8 people recorded as living in his household

My notes re Blacknoe.
The MANOR OF BACKENHO in Thurleigh was owed by John Lawson in 1738 and 1739. In 1753 John Lawson, probably a son and Theodosia his wife were in possession.
Later two other manors grew out of this and became more important - Whitwick known as Thurleigh Hall and Backnoe. None of the older manor houses has survived although the present Blackburn Hall contains chimneys from an earlier dwelling.. in 1707 Blackborne Hall was purchased by Sir Nathan Wright. He died in 1727 and was succeeded by his son Sir Nathan Wright, who in 1733 sold this property to Robert Bell, the maternal grandfather of William Wade Gery, in whose family the property has remained, the present owner being Mr. W. H. Wade-Grey.
The MANOR OF BACKENHO is first found mentioned in 1377
George Smythe was holding the manor in 1637, but in 1672 had given place to William Smythe, whose name occurs in settlements of the manor in 1674, 1682, and finally in 1693, in which year a genuine alienation took place to John Lawson. The latter held Backenho in 1738 and 1739. In 1753 John Lawson, probably a son of the above, and Theodosia his wife were in possession, and between this date and 1792 it passed to James Stuart and May his wife. This property was retained by the Stuarts till late into the 19th century. In 1860 Colonel George Stuart died owning Backenho, at this time a farm, which he left to his nephew.

BACKNOE END, a hamlet in the parish of Thurleigh, 1 mile north of Thurleigh. Backnoe End Farm was n of Backnoe End left off Keysoe Rd opposite turn to Rd to College Farm

Not sure if this helps you find the marriage of William Green to an Ann ??
(still trying to find my missing Sabey marriages, again NC!!). But Anna Green who married John Hartop in 1807 at Bolnhurst was the daughter of a William and Anna Green as when the Hartop children births were registered at Dr Williams Library in London.
William Hartop of Keysoe Row in the Parish of Keysoe Beds born 1808 reg 1815 son of  John Hartop and Anna Green daughter of William and Anna Green
Then Benjamin born 1810 reg 1815, Samuel born 1812 reg 1815, John Born 1814 reg 1816.

Again sure if it is relevant but John Sabey a Baptist had a Farm at Blacknoe which passed to his son William then to his daughter Sarah who married Hartop.

Essex / Samuel Read 1791 N Fambridge
« on: Wednesday 26 February 14 16:19 GMT (UK)  »
Can any help please?
I am looking for a marriage for Samuel Read to Mary about 1815.

According to the census Samuel Read was born 1791 in Woodham Ferris and his wife Mary was born 1795 in East Hanningfield.
The eldest child I know of was Sophia Read born 1816 in Hockley, Essex where Robert and Samuel were born 1822-1826 and possibly Joseph in 1829. They then perhaps moved to North Fambridge by 1833 where Thomas was born and Mary Ann in 1836.
Any help would be appreciated

That seems the obvious answer but Thomas did not have a partner in 1871and why did he not just say married rather than widow? There is also the death reg in 1864 of Martha Reed to consider. I would just like to be sure so looking at all other information

Here is my conundrum.
I hope I have explained everything clearly and given enough information. I have also given where the variation Read/Reed appears.

Thomas Read 1833 N Fambridge married Martha Bines 1833 Canewdon in 1852. They are together in Canewdon in 1861 but in 1871 Thomas is a widow with three children living Ockendon, Essex but there ‘appears’ to be a Martha Bines living at Warley Common Great Warley Essex with two of his children which she names as her ‘stepchildren’ not as her children. Who was she?

Thomas Read born 1833 seems to have emigrated in 1874 to Queensland Australia with his second wife Rebecca nee Medd born 1836 (possibly a widow at the marriage registered 1873 at Orsett ) and four of his children aboard The Glamorganshire in 1874.
From the death registration of Thomas’s daughter Sarah Ann born 1857 who died in 1913 in Australia and gives her parents and Thomas Read and Martha Bines so I am sure that this is the correct Thomas.

In 1871 Thomas was a widow on the census with three children living in South Ockendon, Essex.
Was his wife’s death; Martha REED death Reg 1864 Q2. Romford Essex. (after the birth of their last child Rhoda in 1863)

Considering ‘naming patterns' Martha Bines mother was named Rhoda and Thomas Read had a sister Sophia.
Her birth and death are possibly
Rodah Sophia Read. birth Reg Oct 1863 in Rochford, Essex.
Rosa Sophia Read born abt 1863 Death Reg Apr 1872 - Romford, Essex
This shows a move for the family from Canewdon to the Ockendon/Warley area.

Confusingly there is also a death Registered Apr 1872 at Romford for Martha Read aged 39 born 1833 but if Thomas was a widow in 1871 how could this be Martha his wife but could be the Martha on the 1871 census (see later). Were they simply separated but then who was Martha who died in 1864?

The fourth child of Thomas Read who also emigrated with him in 1874 but was not with Thomas in 1871 was Samuel Read aged 13 in 1874 (born 1861)

Here is where the problem starts
In 1871 Samuel Reed born 1862 Canewdon, Stepson and Radah [Rhoda] S Reed born 1864 Rochford, Stepdaughter were in the household of Martha Pullen [Gullen on FindMyPast. Gullier on IGI any other ideas welcome!] a married Dressmaker aged 38 born in 1833 Canewdon living at White Huts, Warley Common. Essex.

Also with Martha Pullen/Gullen was Thomas Bines aged 31 born 1840 in Canewdon (son of John and Rhoda?) and his family. If Thomas Bines was the brother of a married Martha then it seems she was probably Martha Bines.

If there was only one Martha Bines born circa 1834 in Canewdon and she married in 1852 to Thomas Read born 1834 N. Fambridge a widow in 1871, who was the married Martha ??? on the 1871 census?

In 1871 Martha describes the children not as son and daughter but as ‘step children’, which I understand can also mean related by marriage. Martha’s brother David Bines is given on an earlier census as step-brother to Thomas when he was actually his brother-in-law. If Samuel and Rhoda were Martha's children why did she not acknowledge this, even if she was escaping an unhappy marriage and living under an assumed name?

I have been unable to find Martha Pullen/Gullen born 1833 Canewdon on another census.

I wondered if she may have been related to Martha Bines mother Rhoda Outen. There are three different transcriptions of Martha’s surname, could she have be Martha Outen?
I found a Martha Outen born 1833 Canewdon and that Martha Hales married Edward Outen reg 1854 Q1 Rochford Essex, but this Martha is on the 1871 census with her husband Edward??

I could not find Thomas’s 2nd wife Rebecca Medd on the 1871 census or her death or remarriage in Queensland.
Thomas himself probably died 1883.  ** born England aged 53 years (born 1832) QLD Australia death C478
The family lived in the Bundaberg/Diamantina area of QLD.

Any ideas / opinions for this problem / solutions - gratefully received???
