All the John Luxton births in Devon have been accounted for through the Luxton FHS except the John Luxton illegitimate son of Elizabeth Luxton, baptised 5th Jan 1805 in Wembworthy; and John son of William Luxen of the parish of Crediton and Ann his wife baptised at Cheriton Bishop 21st October (1803?). No-one seems to know what happened to these two.

Do you have any later details of the two Johns you have found in Cornwall? We now have two further possible ancestors to check out. . . .

Hello Gadget,

Many thanks for replying and confirming that's the only Ursula James marriage in Cornwall.

I don't think it's a second marriage as both certificates clearly state 'Ursula Luxton formerly James' and no mention of 'previously Coles'. The first is for Mary b. 2 Nov 1839 and the second is for George b. 13 Dec 1841. I know of 9 children in all from the three census records.

John Luxton says in 1851 that he was born in Cheriton Devon. I have found them in the 1841 when they and their children are all down as born 'in county', and 1861 census which just says 'Devonshire' for the parents. Incidentally, they both seem to age 11 years between each census, being 36 in 1841, 47 in 1851 and 58 in 1861!  The death certificates say age 61 for John Luxton in Dec 1864 and age 62 for 'Asella' in Jan 1865.

I have heard of a family legend that one of our ancestors changed his name, but when and in which way isn't known.

I have details of all the families after this date, but can't get further back because of this mystery.

I wonder if anyone can help solve this mystery.

I have two Surrey birth certificates in which Ursula Luxton formerly James is named as the mother, with John Luxton as the father.

The 1851 census HO107/1603/422/14 shows her age as 47, birthplace Launcells Cornwall. The only birth I can find on IGI in Launcells is 13 Sept 1805, father Thos. James, and the only IGI marriage in Launcells for an Ursula James is to a John Coles on 15 Aug 1822.

Is the Ursula James married to John Luxton the same Ursula who married John Coles ??? and is the birth record for the same person?

Any ideas would be most appreciated,

Michael J.

The London Borough of Merton has a page giving more details of the site of Merton Place:

I found it very interesting, regards Michael.

Are you sure of the roadname? I grew up in Wimbledon and only know of Hartfield Road (B 285), which runs south from Wimbledon station to Kingston Road.

Best wishes, Michael.

Hello Turtle,

The 1894 Ordnance Survey map of Merton, reproduced by Alan Godfrey maps, shows the site of Admiral Lord Nelson's house as being in the area bounded by High Street Merton, Nelson Grove Road, Pincott Road and Abbey Road. It is in a much larger area shown as 'Nelson's Fields'.

I used to live close to that area, and there was between High Path and the railway a small local park with a couple of cannons on plinths. This park was dedicated to Nelson as mentioned in the 'Merton Park Walks' page (re the link posted by Hackstable) under 'Optional extension, 1 mile' at the top of the article, and this quote from the walk instructions: 'Walk through the small park fronting Morden Road. This is dedicated to Nelson whose estate of Merton Place which occupied the site was sold in 1823' confirms that the area above is the correct location of Nelson' house.

The four maps shown in that link are too far to the west.

Hope this helps, regards Michael.

Hi Leanne,

Have you looked on this website?

http://localhistory.kingston.ac.uk/db_forms/LocalHistoryForm.asp

This is a site by Kingston University and they have a number of Street and Harris entries on their Kingston Life Cycles database, including your Mary in Bonner Hill Cemetery.

I don't know if you've found out where The Wanderings are, as I've only just found RootsChat.

These are a group of farm cottages on Cambridge Road, Kingston, named from Wanderings Farm on the eastern corner of Hampden Road and Cambridge Road. See H.O.107/1603/412/1.

Surrey History centre has maps of the area - the farm is on the join of four maps!
