No Problem-!
I found both Carolines in 1841 at Moorfields, St George, Clifton, Bristol:

James Knowels-b.1776- A Carpenter
Sarah Knowels- b.1780
John Knowels- b.1824
Caroline Owen-b.1814- A Laundress
Sarah Owen-b.1832
Mary Owen-b.1834
Caroline Owen-b.1836
Emily Owen-b.1838

Presumably with Caroline Snr's parents?

In The Manchester Times 16 Oct 1846  there is a list of Transfers of Public Houses- including the York Minster, Deansgate from Edward Evans to Arthur Peters.

I checked and found that the York Minster pub was on the site of what is now The John Rylands library.

Wow... I haven't been able to continue searching until now, and it looks like the mystery may have been solved!

As ever with family stories, there is a kernel of truth in there somewhere!

The only extra record I can find is a record of medals for Alfred Crossland  of the 6th Hussars
(Carabineers) died 12 May 1859 : Indian Mutiny Medal 1857-59

In the Nottingham Review of 17 May 1833, there is mention of a Francis Crossland of Basford- a pinder- being assaulted.

I checked- a pinder is "a person whose job was to impound stray animals"...

I'll keep checking!

London and Middlesex / Re: Clara Mary Matthews - Missing prior to 1901
« on: Monday 24 January 22 20:47 GMT (UK)  »
Perhaps she  did not give her correct date of birth at marriage and in subsequent census records?

There is a Clara Mary Matthews born in Chelsea Q4 1856-mmn Cranfield. Also 3 different Clara Mary Matthews in London born 1857/58 on census returns prior to 1901

What is the name of her father on the marriage certificate?
