Thanks to all! Thanks for checking the GRO index David - I think that settles it. Just goes to prove once again that the census takers were human!

Thanks David - but is that the same family? The age of John is somewhat different. I did find a marriage for Benjamin with a Caroline Pickering in Silkstone (on Familysearch) on 4th June 1827 and your find would presumably relate to that couple. That might rule them out though!  I wouldn't have thought that Benjamin/Caroline Musgr(e)ave combinations were so common!

That's a great start. Thank you Rosie and Liz. Any sign of William Grayson anywhere?

Cheers,

I would like to trace the backgrounds of John Musgrave (also spelt Musgreave) and Martha Grayson who married in Barnsley in 1856. The later census returns indicate that they were both born in Barnsley. Any help much appreciated!

Many thanks Annette and Annie. It now looks then, if I've got this right,  that 'my' Fanny was in fact Frances and was in fact the daughter of Maria and William after all. I can't stop at present to try and get my head round anymore - but thank you for unravelling it all and making sense of it.

Thanks again,
Phil

My primary aim is to trace the ancestors of Fanny. It would appear that the Gro records clearly show that her mother's maiden name was Shaw, presumably the Hannah Shaw shown as marrying William in 1865. The quandary is how Fanny fits into the household of William and Maria in 1871 and why Hannah is not classed as a daughter-in-law. I think you can appreciate why I need help! I'm thinking that Charles and George may be the illegitimate children of Maria. I'm also beginning to think that William practised polygamy!! Any further help much appreciated!

Nottinghamshire / Were Fanny Bramley's parents related?

Fanny Bramley b.1867 Hucknall Torkard appears to have been the daughter of William Bramley who married Maria Bramley in 1862. The question is whether her parents were cousins and, if so, then of what degree? Help please!

I'm having difficulty determining who Arthur Davis(snr)'s mother was. Could somebody please look up William Davis(b.1834/5 Hucknall Torkard) in the 1861 census for me please?
