Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Help with photo cleanup please
« on: Monday 07 January 13 10:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Can some kind person help me with a clean-up/repair of this photo of my great grandmother and her sister. While I can process the image to make it clearer there is a nasty scratch through my great great Aunt Helen's face.
The photo is quite small so I have made it available via a link as it exceeds size limits to try to keep the quality as good as possible

Thank you - Mark

World War One / Re: John Joseph Moynihan - Royal Navy?

Hi Gorton boy,

It might be him if this is not a birth but a service related date, it wouldn't be the first time a family member joined the services within 2 months of getting married. However there are 3 John Moynihans born between 1871 and 1875 to I need to be careful and keep what the other ones were doing as well.

Thanks for this info though, it certain gives me a reason to look into this further.

many thanks - Mark

Ah another though, He had a Son also John Joseph Moynihan who was born around this time however he died in 1914 in the Royal Irish Riffles.

World War One / John Joseph Moynihan - Royal Navy?
« on: Wednesday 05 September 12 10:40 BST (UK)  »
Is it possible to find out if someone was in the Royal Navy?

I have just received a copy of one of my great grandmothers marriage certificates where she gives her father, John Joseph Moynihan (deceased by 1959) as being a Leading Seaman (Royal Navy). This is the first and only reference I have seen to him being in the RN. He was born approx' Feb 1871 so my guess would most likely be WW1. None of the census records before 1911 make any reference to the RN although he appears to be missing from the 1891 census even though he marries in August 1891 in Newington near where is was born in Rotherhithe. However he gives his occupation as Labourer in August 1891 which is compatible with his usual description of Waterfront Labourer/Stevadore/Barge Builder.

I really am not sure if my great grandmother has just invented this Navy occupation or if it might be true.

Any help greatfully received - Mark

Yes!, It's great isn't, what a mess of names. In 1861 Jeremiah is shown as being 1 and born in Ebbevale Monmouthshire. In 1871 he is a girl and born in Cork. I think the family cannot read and write and are getting others to complete the census returns for them which might account for some variability. At least I can put in the tree now as a boy ;)

Thank you.

I just found Jeremiah in 1891 married to Catherine Kennedy living at 13 Guildford St Bermondsey with his mother-in-law Ann. Surname Minihan again.

Looking again I can see the Catherine and John are the two youngest. The others would have been of sufficient age to have left home by 1881

There is a good candidate for Bridget being dead.

BMD Q2 1873 St Olave 1d 186, two entries for the same record implying the age is not quite certain but 34 would be spot on.

I am therefore thinking the children are back in Ireland, with a family member in the UK that I do not know about or in the workhouse.

in 1901 John is living with his Wife Alice (Cooper) and children at 36 Ainsty Street
