Family History Beginners Board / Help
« on: Sunday 19 October 08 14:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
Help please with the following question. Has anyone encountered the reason why a family member of would be buried in a grave with names that have no apparent connection?
I have a brother of my great grandfather (Beckwith) who is buried in a plot of Clarkes. Although it seems they lived in the same area, I cannot trace a relationship. I have checked marriage as I thought he may have been a brother in lawbut no luck. Additional twist is that there is a family Beckwith plot in the same cemetery !!
Thanks
Paul

Lancashire / Missing Family?
« on: Saturday 18 October 08 21:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Trying to follow a lead about my maternal great gandmother has led to a problem. The 1881 census shows the following:
John McCormick 41 b Chorlton, Manchester
Catherine 40 b Ireland
John 18 (all the children born Chorlton)
Jeremiah 16
Samuel 12
Elizabeth 9
Thomas 6
David 3
Ann 10 months
My problem is that I cannot trace this family group 10 years earlier in the 1871 Census?
Any ideas welcome.
Regards
Paul

Hi
Thanks for your information.

GrandmaSheila. I had not thought about the two records being for the same person. Thanks. We think that Valentine did marry in 1904 but definitely to a Catherine McCormick whose first child was born in 1905 (Catherine Connolly, my Grandma). There were two other sisters, Lillian and Lena and a brother John. A Valentine who dies very young is possible.
There were no indications that Valentine was born in Ireland but there has to be a connection with the name. I have no info on his parents.
Thomas as a brother was not known to my mother but is possible.

Regards,
Paul

Hi
My maternal great grandfather was Valentine Connolly born around 1870. All I know about him for  sure was that he served in the regular army before WW1 and was born and lived in the Manchester area. The family guess he died in the mid 1940's.
1. I would like help to trace his army records
2. the 1881 census has only two close matches, one born in Oldham (no reference to this in our family) and the other living in Swinton Industrial School. Would it have been possible to move from such a place into the regular army?
3. He does not appear anywhere else e.g. the 1901 census but may have been in the army then.

thanks
Paul
