Yes that seems to be the general consensus. Irwin was a Reverend of some sort. They seemed to have several children. One of them being my 4th great-grandfather, James Stuart, who built Gracehill House in Derrykeighan for his wife Grace Lynd.

It's too bad Irish records are so difficult to work with.

I think I need to write this all down in a book or else my head will explode.

So, where is everyone in the Stuart/Stewart/Steuart family? I supposedly descend from Irwin Stuart and Elizabeth McDaniel. I presume he was born in Ireland since his mother was Jane Irwin who was supposedly from Roscommon and was the daughter of Christopher Irwin and Sarah Ormsby.

Then Irwin Stuart, his wife Elizabeth, and his sister who married Elizabeth's brother Charles, all moved to Derrykeighan. Is this right? I've had the hardest time with these Stuarts and trying to keep them all straight.

That's an interesting bit about the Stewart in Spain.

What can we find out about the Stuart who was supposedly the ambassador to Turin? I believe it was mentioned by Charles Stewart and then a Google search I did brought up something about the Brigadier and how Irwin Stuart was his grandson. It said a Stuart (maybe Irwin) had a relative who lived in Italy in a convent and wanted him to send one of his daughters but he wouldnt. I'll try to find the link.

It's all very confusing. I'm sure I read somewhere too that these Stuarts/Stewarts/Steuarts were not related to any of the other Stewarts in Ireland.

Hi Benody,

She quotes the manuscript of Charles George Stuart (are you familiar with this?) and then points out that “proofs of the assertions made in the first part of it are, so far, not forthcoming”.

She mentions several William Stewarts involved in King William’s army, “but further investigation would appear to exclude them on one account or another.”  Therefore there doesn’t seem to be any evidence of who Irwin Stuart’s grandfather was.

The father of Irwin Stewart was neither James nor Alexander, but Henry, and is so given in another “tree” compiled by the late Lieut. Irwin, and continued by his cousin Henry Irwin.  Irwin Stewart, in his entry to Trinity College, Dublin, gives the name of his father as Henry.

A will of a Sarah Ormsby, dated 17--, mentions her grand-dau. Jane Stuart, and one of the witnesses of the will is “Hen: Stuart.”

Gilby

Thanks so much Gilby. So Henry was his father. Thanks for clarifying that. I suppose there's no way of finding out Henry's father's name now. I've tried to make the connection between Irwin Stuart's father and Brigadier-General William Steuart. The dates don't like up for them to have been father and son.

Thanks Gilby! That would be great.

Does it mention anything about who Irwin Stuart's father and grandfather were?

The one who married Joyce Waters. I'm a descendant of William and Clementia.

I've started looking at the Coldicotts and Waters. It's hard to get back one more generation on them. There's a lot of William Colidcotts born around the same time and same area. I only have a sub to Ancestry so I can't see what's on Find My Past but it might have more. I tried using Family Search as well. Going by other trees seems useless because everyone has different information. The sources they have are fine but there's no way of knowing if they have the correct baptism. In those situations I usually look at the father's name. So for example there was a William Coldicott born to Stephen and Hannah. The date is a bit off but the place looks good. I would think that the name Stephen would have been given to one of William and Joyce's sons, even if just a middle name. So for now I'm going to say that Stephen is probably not the father of your William. I like to try to prove and disprove that.

You say that you believe William's parents were John Coldicott and Mary Lane. So again, try to prove or disprove it. Yours is the first I've seen to have those parents. Other trees have Stephen and Hannah but other names as well. I'm less likely to believe those other trees only because I've seen the baptisms that they have sourced and I don't think there's any logic behind it. I think it's likely they saw the baptism as a hint. Name looks good, birth date is close enough, place looks good so it must be for him. I like to do more sleuthing than that.

I haven't dug into William and Joyce's children too much yet. Is it just Joseph Waters Coldicott who uses the Underhill name for his children?

I'm going to see what I can find. What sources do you have for William's parents and birth date? There seem to be a few trees on Ancestry with different parents for William. Do you know where he might have been born?

That's interesting! There must be a connection to the Underhills. I'd be curious to see what the connection is.

In my tree I have an Underhill Coldicott born about 1772 in Coventry to John Coldicott (1742) and Sibella Ludford. Those are the only line of Coldicotts I have that were in Coventry.

Now I'm curious and want to figure it out.

Yes that's the Hannah I'm after. She was born 1 Oct 1848. The one on the census is down as Hannah M. Pardoe born about 1860 in Stourbridge, a milliner. I wonder if the age on the census was a mistake and the age given was wrong, whether intentionally or unintentionally. The one on the census was a visitor so perhaps the person given the information didn't know her age. I don't know. It just seems strange that I can't find her in the 1881 census and then there's this younger woman but no birth registered for her.
