Hello,

William Thain's parents were George Alexander Thain and Annie Geddes; he was born in Scotland. Not a twin but he was the 3rd of 11 children.

Here's the cemeteries I found, I don't know if they can be accessed though:

Waverley Memorial Gardens
Green Arces Funeral Home & Cemetery
Kildonan Presbyterian Cemetery - I remember his auntie married in East Kildonan (I think this is an area of Winnipeg, so I have a funny feeling about this one)

Unless he was cremated, in which death records would be the best bet to find when he died.

Many thanks

This explains a lot; William must have been buried with his second wife, so perhaps he's not buried in Elmwood Cemetery. Are there any other cemeteries in the Winnipeg area where you can find burial indexes like this one - very useful!

He was living in 1945 but deceased by 1994; quite possible that he died in the 60s, 70s or 80s but I'm just not sure when. His wife died in 1994. I'm not entirely sure where his second wife Nancy stayed though perhaps she was buried at a cemetery near the funeral home mentioned in the obituary or the Victoria Hospital where she died. If we can find her burial location then there may be a record for William's date of death.

Thanks,

Greg

Hello,

I already had those details for Harrison Smith but I wasn't sure if they were right; you've just confirmed that for me so thank you.

As for Jeannie Smith, I cannot find an obituary for her; highly doubtful that she is living due to her age. However her name has numerous variations (Jean, Jeanne, Jeannie etc.) so there is a chance that her name is spelled differently on her obituary. I haven't been able to find any children for them though, would you be able to help me with that?

Also on the 1960 and 1964 directories there's a 'Margaret Palmer Simpson', do you know if this is a relation, perhaps their daughter or Jeannie's sister?

By looking at directories for James and his wife Louise I found a son, J (probably living), while for J and L Montgomery there is a daughter R (also possibly living). However this is as far as I can go, I'm not entirely sure how to check the later directories to find their children.

Thank you,

Greg

I have a marriage certificate for Catherine Carlen nee McKenzie:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11679-18790-90?cc=1520640 - Margaret's maiden name is down as 'Uawie' as opposed to 'Cowie' - must be very difficult to make it out!

Also got one for Jeannie Smith nee McKenzie, registered as 'Jeanne':
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11876-40045-8?cc=1520640 - Margaret's maiden name is 'Corvie' now.

Marriage certificate for James:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11615-24913-39?cc=1520640 - James' spouse Louise Elsie Leonard passed away in 2010 at the age of 93.

I'll try and find some more information. I found when Catherine and James died, but I don't know what happened to Jeanne.

Regards

Greg

Hello,

Thanks for the death certificate, very interesting to look at!

For the passenger list to New York, I'm assuming that Margaret is the brother to James, I'm assuming you're referring to her as the 'daughter' of John McKenzie and Margaret Cowie. I didn't realise that there was another child called Alexander; more family to find then!

I found the marriages for a few of them before, I can't seem to find them at the moment but I will try and dig them out to see.

As far as I know Catherine seemed to be the only one who left the Concord area - the others all lived or died in the surrounding area

Thanks,

Greg

I'm looking for some relatives that emigrated from Buckie, Scotland to the USA.

John McKenzie b 17 August 1879 Scotland, d 4 April 1932 in Concord
Margaret McKenzie (nee Cowie) b 17 June 1882 Scotland, d 1 December 1976 in Concord.
They were married on 6th December 1901 in Scotland. I'm trying to work out when they emigrated to America and what happened to some of their children. They had their last child in Scotland in 1918 but there's a chance they could have had children in America.

Children:
James McKenzie 9 January 1902 - September 1968 (Married to Louise Elsie Leonard in 1945)
Margaret McKenzie 9 April 1904 - No details on her, she's one of the ones I need help with
Helen McKenzie 18 November 1906 - June 1966
Jeannie Cowie McKenzie 3 September 1910 - No death details - think she married Harrison B. Smith
Catherine McKenzie 10 December 1912 - 13 January 1984 (Married to Jans Julias Carlen in 1935)
J McKenzie born in 1918 (Married to L Montgomery in 1938)

I've put initials for the final child as there is a chance that they are both still living. I have no details from Margaret aside from her birth, and I can't find a death date for Jeannie though I have a possible marriage in 1935. Catherine moved to Encinitas in San Diego; her son Jans McKenzie Carlen passed away last year; from that I gathered she had a daughter who is still living.

So as you can see I do have a fair bit of information on this family but there's still areas I'm lacking in; I cannot find death or marriage dates for them all (I don't think Helen McKenzie married). I have details on the parents, I'd just like to find out what happened to their children. Would anyone be able to help me on this; are there any websites or indexes that would be of good use?

Many thanks,

Greg

Hi,

I'm trying to find when my relative died but I've had no luck yet, though I've got plenty of information that could help to find it.

William James Thain was born on 9th June 1900 in Scotland; he was deceased by 1994. Married twice to Gladys Lerry and Nancy Paterson. Both are in the Winnipeg Press (Gladys died 1936, Nancy in 1994). On Nancy's newspaper entry it says she was predeceased by husband William so I know he was living between 1943 (when he married again) and 1994.

I imagine his death would be in the Winnipeg Tribune; I've done advanced Google searches and even found his wife, but no luck for him. It's highly likely that a paper would mention his death though seeing as it mentioned various of his relatives. The only way to look for me is to go through each daily newspaper which would take hours - would anyone be able to offer me some guidance?

Many thanks,

Greg

Hi Everyone,

Just thought I'd let you know that I found a death entry for Nancy in the Winnipeg Free Press in 1994:

NANCY AGNES THAIN neePATERSON On November after a lengthy ill Nancy passed away peacefully at the Victoria at the age of She will be lovingly re membered by her two Archie Thel ma Peterson of John Diane Paterson and their John and all of Win nipeg as well as numer ous nieces and She was predeceased by her husband William and her only daughter Patri cia one brother Louis and one sister Born in Nancy moved to Canada at an early She was educated in Winnipeg and employed for many years at the Eaton Nancy was an active member of Spar ling United She was a longtime member of the Eastern Her love for music was ex pressed to all who knew In her later years she enjoyed singing in the choir at the Arms of the Cross Seniors Resi A heartfelt thanks to Kaufman and staff of the Sth Floor of Victoria Hospital for their care and compas A special to Joan McFarlane and Jeanne Smith for their outstanding care shown to our A memorial service will be held No vember 21 at at Chapel Lawn Funeral 4000 Portage

Some words are obviously missing but it mentions their daughter Patricia whom I found last night by accident, and it also mentions that William was deceased by then; I think he was living in 1984 so that narrows it down quite a bit. Also mentions her brothers Archie and John and a sister who predeceased her (Elizabeth Leighton passed in 1992). That'll make it a bit easier to find William as he'll probably be in those archives somewhere...

Thanks,

Greg

Hi,

I've found them and actually have them in my tree, George moved out to Australia and died in 1919 at 3 Yarra Street in Newport, his wife died there in 1911, though I couldn't find any children. Would you be able to tell me who their children are, and what one is your direct line?

Thank You,

Greg
