Hi
I'm looking for any info on a family who moved from UK to Montreal in 1910 and returned in 1919.
Thomas Banks (b1879 Hull, UK) was a cashier or bookkeeper
Florence Banks (b1884 Hull, UK)
Phyllis Rosina Banks (b1911, Quebec)
I have found them in the 1911 Canadian census, and there are several passenger lists for them. On the census they live in Maisonneuve in Quebec. It says he's been in Canada since 1905 but I can't find a passenger record for him then.
They returned in 1919 but we don't know why. The family rumour is Thomas Banks fled England to avoid financial trouble. They left when Florence was 7 months pregnant! As far as we can tell they only had the one child.
I just wondered if there were any local newspapers or anywhere else I could search to find out any more about their time there and why they returned. He went back and forth from Canada to England several times during this time. When they eventually settled back in England he committed suicide in 1931.
Any advice or pointers to other sources would be gratefully received.
Thanks
Kirsten
