Warwickshire / Re: Button Makers in Birmingham.

Birmingham Art Gallery has new galleries devoted to the history of Birmingham. A section of it is about button makers, with film of the process being done by a man in the present day but in the traditional style, by hand. Some wonderful examples of mother-of-pearl buttons on display too. Well worth a visit if you can. I think the surviving button maker is in the Jewellery Quarter and does talks on the subject.

He wanted Robert Graham's farm.
It looks like Point to me.

I didn't know the census could be searched - it would have saved me a lot of time going through all of our village!

Stan as ever you are a wealth of information. As for the Above Ground, it may have been an addition. I haven't got the record to hand.
Giraffe's comment probably does regrettably refer to the mouth!

Occupation Interests / Gobber

This is a good name for an occupation!
I am researching coal-mining in the area where I live and on the 1911 census one person described himself as a "coal miner above ground - gobber". Looking in the dictionary "gob" is waste used to fill holes after coal-mining so I suppose this occupation is someone who fills in the holes.
Just thought someone else might find this useful or have more information.

At least you have narrowed it down to England or India! ;)

The opinion of the two relatives I have consulted is that it is not their relative. I think they are wrong but hey, it's not my family.
The fact is that he died in Cheshire in 1987 and he was married there in Sept 1929, his eyes are identical to the one in your photo, but that's not good enough apparently. So I will keep a copy of the picture just in case but I will not trouble you to send me the original. (yet!)

Well I still favour Sept 1929. That fits with Gt Uncle's age, born 1900.

The person who replied to your query about dates might be right, but in Cheshire I guess they were a bit behind the current fashion ;) As for his age on the photo, he does look young, but the picture might be smoothed over.

I have a couple of photos of this uncle, one as a teenager and one in his 60s and the features are very like. More later...
