Now that we have established that WGS was NOT a widower in 1872 I need to try to figure out if he really is my great great grandfather at all.

This is a comparison between the two..... please feel free to comment :)

Irish WGS                                                    English WGS
William Garner Snowden                             William Garner Snowden
Born - England                                            Born - Newcastle, England
Father - William                                           Father - William
Fathers Occ -  Bookbinder                           Fathers Occ -  Bookbinder
Occ. Engineer / machine fitter                     Occ. Whitemetal worker (earlier census), Surgical Tool mfgr

These are the pieces that DONT tally...though I do realise that ages are not to be relied upon
DOB: 1848 / 1839                                       DOB: 1829
Status - Single                                            Status - Married

If he is the same man, then he married Kate Roe in 1872, they had 6 girls and 1 son and he died in 1910 in Dublin. He worked for C&C, the mineral water company as an engineer / machine fitter. He was my great great grandfather.

...only I dont know now how I can say for definite if they are one and the same.

Sorry, they probably weren't cousins - I've just found Ann Garner in 1851 and she was a widow, aged 34 living at 43 Norfolk Street, Sheffield, Surgical bandage maker.

oops nearly missed this on the new page :)

This is definitely her as the address tallies with that of the 1861 census.

So she was a widow - that explains why I was having an unfruitful time trying to find a birth record for her. Stretching it, I suppose she could have been married to one of Williams cousins.....

Thanks so much for your time on this,
Denise

I just searched on Ancestry for Garner Snowden and came up with marriages for Ann Garner Snowden and Jane Garner Snowden in 1857 and a death of Thomas Garner Snowden in 1907.

These appear to be the siblings of William Garner Snowden; it looks as though all the Snowden children had the middle name Garner so it is possible their mother's maiden name was Garner.

Sandra

Yes Sandra - they are siblings. Their mother was Sarah Garner and she gave most of them Garner as their middle name.

if you look at family trees on Ancestry relating to the Garner Snowdens you will find  one there called WGS - this is me!!! and my attempt at piecing together the family.

Sandra thanks a million - will have to go take a look again.

This throws a few cats amongst the pidgeons :)

In a 1879 Sheffield Trade Directory I have her listed as Mrs Ann Garner Snowden at 12 Upper Chipping House Road, Sheffield, so the address is spot on - but this is the first record I have of her DOB being 1818, it is 1821 everywhere else (though even at 1821 she was 8 years older than her husband.....maybe she just didnt want him to know that she was actually 11 years older :D)

The next is that she is down as a widow - you see my theory is that her husband legged it off to Dublin and married my great great grandmother Kate Roe in 1872. Then again - maybe it was easier to describe herself as a widow rather than explain where himself was?

I love this ;D ;D

Thanks for your help girls

Hello again Carole,

I've just done a little googling on the address listed in the 1871 census (97a Norfolk Road, Sheffield) and found the following in a 1871 Trade Directory (sorry tried to attach the image but cant figure out how to do it!!)

A. GARNER
(Late W.G. Snowdon)

SURGICAL INSTRUMENT,
ARTIFICIAL LIMB, TRUSS
ELASTIC STOCKING & BANDAGE
MANUFACTURER

97A NORFOLK STREET & 2, HOWARD STREET, SHEFFIELD
Surgical machinist to the Sheffield General Infirmary,  Public Hospital and Dispensary,
Rotherham Dispensary and other charities

So it seems she's gone back to her maiden name - I knew she was either Ann Garner or Ann Chatterton from their marriage index, at least this confirms her maiden name....

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Sheffield Death lookup - SNOWDEN, Ann
« on: Wednesday 21 July 10 16:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Could some kind soul look up deaths/burials for Ann Snowden b. 1821 in Handley or Hawnbey, Yorkshire, as either Ann Garner or Ann Chatterton.

m. William Garner Snowden (b. Newcastle in 1829) in 1854 in Sheffield.

I think (hope!!) she died in 1871, as I think her husband married my gr gr grandmother 1872 in Dublin  :o

She lived in Norfolk Street, Sheffield in both the 1861 (with her husband) and 1871 (he wasnt there but she is listed as married) censuses. I cant find sign or sight of him after the 1861 census (but maybe that's because he was in Dublin wooing Kate Roe!!!)

Many thanks
Denise

Hi all,

I am trying to establish if a certain gentleman who was married to a Yorkshire lady (Sheffield as far as I can see) is also the same gentleman who was married to my gr gr grandmother in Dublin in 1872

This is how it goes - William Garner Snowden b. 1829 in Newcastle, m. Ann (either Garner or Chatterton) in 1854 in Sheffield. They are together (in Sheffield) in 1861 census, she's there in 1871 but listed as married but no sign of him.

Then in May 1872 my gr gr grandmother married an Englishman called William Garner Snowdon, fathers name and occupation are the same Newcastle WGS, though he is listed as a bachelor.

So if these two gentlemen are one and the same then either
a) The A
Ann dies in 1871 and he leaves for Dublin, or
b) they split up (did they have divorce back then???) and he gets married again

So finally I get to the bit where I need help - could some kind soul check to see if an Ann Snowden (or Snowdon) died between 1861 and 1871
