Sligo / Re: Scott and Clarke families of Skreen
« on: Sunday 21 August 22 07:06 BST (UK)  »
I have found 2 Patrick Scotts in the Griffiths Valuations. One at Mullaroe with 25 acres and one at Drumnagool with 50 acres. So probably two separate people.

Against that it appears that William Scott born 1868 at Drumnagool, son of John Scott and Margaret Clarke, was at Mullaroe in 1911 aged 42.

The William Scott at Mullaroe was the son of John Scott as evidence by his marriage to Lizzie Craven in 1913. However it is possible that the Scott farm at Mullaroe had become vacant and was purchased by William. William, Lizzie and their son John William Percy Scott, are all buried at Skreen.

Sligo / Scott and Clarke families of Skreen
« on: Saturday 20 August 22 12:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to sort out the relationships of some of the Clarkes of Ardnaglass. There are a couple of Clarke families that are not supposed to be related to my Clarke family of Carrownree but I thought I would try and sort them out.

I  particularly want to be sure I have the correct relationships for the Scotts who married  the Clarkes in the family of John Clarke of Soodry (in Griffiths Valuations of 1857) presumed son of James Clarke of Soodry (in 1833 Tithes)

I do  not have a record for the burial of this John Clarke at Skreen so think he may have died before 1877 as I only have access to the the records from 1877.

I believe John was the John Clarke of Ardnaglass who was listed as the father of the following people:

#1 Margaret Clarke aged 21 daughter of John, married John Scott of Drumnagool,  son of Patrick,  in 1855. So Margaret was born c1834

This couple were in Drumnagool in 1911 and are buried at Skreen.
Margaret Scott died 6 Dec 1919 aged 87 and her death was registered by her son William.
I cannot find John's death registration but the burial record shows he died  April 1922 aged 93.

#2 Thomas Clarke widower aged 34, son of John, married Catherine Scott aged 25 of Carrowdurneen, daughter of Robert in 1872. So Thomas Clarke was born c1837.

This couple were at Ardabrone in 1911 and are also buried at Skreen.
Thomas Clarke died 7 May 1924 aged 87
Catherine died 18 Apr 1932 aged 90.

#3 William Clarke son of John married Emma Siddons in 1872. William's age was not given and he left Ireland before 1901, though their children were born at Soodry and baptised in Skreen apart from the youngest child Emma who was born in Boston c1885. William seems to have died between 1885 and 1887 when his wife Emma remarried. But as I have not found that death, I do not know when approximately William was born.

#4 Mary Clarke of Ardnaglass aged 17, daughter of John married Robert Scott, widower of Doonalton son of Patrick, in 1856. So Mary was born c1839.

As it happens Robert was previously married to Mary Wallace, a niece of my 2x gt grandmother Mary Wallace of Easky. At the time of that marriage (1853) Robert gave his location as Mullaroe (Skreen).

So my main question is whether the Patrick Scott, father of Robert is the same Patrick Scott who was the father of John. Patrick Scott of Drumnagool died March 1882 aged 98. Death registered by grandson William Scott.

To complete the list of children of John I have:
#5 Sarah Clarke    b c 1845         m  1865   Edward Williams
#6 Susan Clarke   b c 1845         m 1867    John Martin

I would be also interested to know if the two Scott families of Skreen (of Carrowdurneen and Drumnagool) were related to each other.

I would be grateful if anybody can help with this tangle of Scotts and Clarkes.

Sligo / Re: Unkles families

Thank you Sinaan for the confirmation that Molly belongs to the family of John Oswald Unkles where I have placed. My grandfather was also an Oswald (Livington).

I have also contacted a Dorran tree owner to see if she can confirm the 1940 photos are the same Molly.

I hope the two siblings I named were deceased, as otherwise I would expect not to be able to see their names in the trees I viewed. However a paternal aunt has just turned 98 so I know not to assume someone in their late 90s is no longer living.

Hi Helen

Yes these Sligo families did often have connections in previous generations so I have traced back along the families of some of the spouses of my family. My gt grandfather William Livingston was from the parish of Killoran but his mother Mary Wallace was from Easky and I have been in contact with the owner of one of the Sherlock trees about our Easky connections.

I think the James Sherlock (died 2008) who married Patricia (Patsy) Unkles was the son of Henry Sherlock who I happen to have in my tree. I just dod not have James in that family but both the Sherlock trees I looked at do have James. The hint for his tombstone that came up when I added him shows that he lived at Stonehall. I have that Sherlock line back to Henry's parents Thomas Sherlock and Elizabeth Brett. I have Wallace/Brett connections and Clarke/Brett connections.

When my parents visited Skreen in 1982 the vicar told my mother that she was probably related to most of the people buried there. My Livingston gt grandparents are buried at Skreen next to the 2x gt Clarkes.  Bob Livingston returned to Sligo from the US when he retired in the 70s and both he and  and his sister Mabel are also buried at Skreen.

There was a Mary Elizabeth Unkles born 1922 in Sligo  (Dromore West) but that record is still outside the viewable online range. As is the marriage of Mary Elizabeth Uncles to Thomas Henry Dorran in 1947.

So this Molly could be the same Molly as the 1940 photos, and also the cousin of Helen's father.

Actually I am wondering if in fact there are two Molly Unkles in the photos. The one in the pre 1928 photos with Isabella Harte and Bob Livingston would be the one who was the same generation as Bob (b1891).

However the Molly Unkles who was in the USA in the 1940s could possibly be the next generation.

Thank you Helen and Sinan

John Oswald Unkles (b1898)  was a younger  brother of Isabella Unkles who married Thomas Harte. So his daughters would not be the right generation but one could have been named after the Molly whose photo I have.

I have just collected some of his family from a Sherlock tree as his daughter Patricia Margaret Unkles born 1929 married a James Sherlock in 1953. She died 2014 so is not Mary Elizabeth.

As John Oswald Unkles married in 1921 his children were mostly born after 1922 and so the Sherlock trees may not have all the children and Mary Elizabeth could be one. How old she was she when she died? At the moment the Sherlock trees only have 2 siblings for Patricia, Avery b 1923 and Robert b 1925.

Hi Jason Mac

Thank you for the marriage details for Matthew Snoddy and Fanny Lynn. So it looks like Fanny was a widow of a Lynn and the daughter of a John Agnew.

Possibly related to her mother in law to be, Jane Agnew. But too many Agnews.

The witness, Ezekiel D Wiley would also have been living in Ballycushion.  Again a possibility is that Fanny was living with the Wileys but was not a daughter of Hugh Wiley, or a sister of Ezekiel.

I don't know Nathaniel William Campbell but I think one of the Presbyterian ministers in the area was a Campbell. Gilby will know.

I do have a group of siblings for my William Lynn of Kilgreel though only have confidence in one, Joseph Lynn b c1814 who died 1894. (I have a DNA match). So Jospeh was not the deceased husband of Fanny. Though I do not know the name of Joseph's wife, his family were born up to the mid 1860s.

Interesting about that other Fanny Lynn. I do have a Lemon middle name in the son of one of my grandfather's Graham cousins but that was because the cousin's wife was the daughter of a William Lemon McKeown b c1853. It looks like his parents were James McKeown and Eliza Lemon of Belfast who married 1850.

Donegal / Re: Searching for Hugh McLaughlin
« on: Sunday 12 June 22 14:50 BST (UK)  »
I have just found that Taughboyne records are now online e.g.
https://www.ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/registers/Taughboyne/TaughboyneBaptisms.pdf

I have found an 1824 baptism for Hugh McLaughlin son of Hugh McLaughlin, sexton and Susan Watson. So it would appear that these are not your Hugh McLaughlin's.

To illustrate the point about names, Samuel McLaughlin and Margaret Sheilds named their possibly second daughter Susan.Which might mean that their possibly first daughter was named Margret after her maternal grandmother. Which would be nice as I do not have a name for the wife of Samuel Sheilds.
