Lancashire Lookup Requests / Joseph BAINES b. 1807 Claughton on Brock
« on: Monday 22 February 10 01:15 GMT (UK)  »
My ancestor from Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States, is Joseph Baines. His cemetery headstone has been found:

Inscription:
JOSEPH BAINES
BORN June 26, 1807
[looks like June 26, 1807. This date, independently recorded, does exactly match a Joseph Baines born in Claughton-on-Brock, Lancashire, England - emigrated to America 1827]
[cannot read next line]
ENGLAND
DIED June 21st, 1851

It sure looks like he is the second Joseph Baines in this family, thanks to an email through a Baines family researcher:

   6. Joseph BAINES b: 26 JUN 1807 in Claughton On Brock, LAN, ENG c: 26 JUN 1807 in Saint Thomas-Rc, Claughton On Brock LAN ENG

and they think he went to US.

Parents James Baines and Cecily Swarbrick.

I have a list of children from the Records of St. Thomas.

Does anyone know if son William also went to US?

   3. William BANES b: 6 JAN 1803 in Claughton On Brock, LAN, ENG c: 6 JAN 1803 in Saint Thomas-Rc, Claughton On Brock LAN ENG

I have perhaps found him in 1840, Allegheny, Allegheny, Pennsylvania:

1840 Census
William Banes two away from  Joseph Banes, if it is our Joseph. I think it likely it is.
looks like William Banes but hand writing is cramped.

Do you think this is him, or did he stay in England?

What did James Baines do for a living, does anyone know the Baines back then? or the Swarbricks?

Stirlingshire / John Christie m. Catherine Muirhead (Kerr) St. Ninians
« on: Sunday 21 February 10 23:38 GMT (UK)  »
My mother in law is a great granddaughter of John Christie b. St. Ninians 1839, d. Sterling, 1897. His first wife was Catherine Muirhead, (1840-1867) dau. of Peter Muirhead and Jane Kerr. Peter (b. abt 1811 Bannockburn?) may have been the son of John Muirhead and Jannet unknown. Anyone have info?

Jane Kerr was the daughter of what looks like M. S. ???

Back to John Christie (1839-1897). I was sent a copy of their wedding registry, and it looks like his parents were James and Elizabeth Christie. It looks like he was from Wester Green farm, so perhaps of the James Christie of Westergreen Yards?

Does anyone know more of James Christie b. abt 1811 or other Christies of Westergreen Yards or Wester Greenyards? On another document it looks like his wife Elizabeth's name may have been Monnock or Munnoch.

Thank you,
JB in New York

Surrey Lookup Requests / Guildford Friends Meeting _ MILES family 1818-1832
« on: Sunday 21 February 10 22:47 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for information on the Miles family who lived in Guildford sometime between 1818 and 1832, 1832 being when they emigrated to Montreal, Canada. There were 8 children born in England to Henry Miles and Mary Hagen. We had assumed that they were born in Staines or Stanwell, Middlesex, Mary Hagen's home (dau. of Simeon Warner Hagen and Mary Ashby, more info on them would be nice, but will post on Middlesex page) but recently we found that Henry and the family had a Certificate from the Guildford Meeting and were mentioned by another resident of Montreal as having stated that he met Henry Miles "from Guildford". Children: Lucy b. 1819, Henry b. 1820, George b. 1822, Mary Ann b. 1824 died age 6, Hannah b. 1825, Eliza b. 1828, Sarah b. 1829, and Richard b. 1831. Ann Miles would have been Henry's mother, if she lived with them.

Henry Miles, my G G G Grandfather, was a mill owner, geologist, amateur scientist and farmer. He was active in the abolition movement in the US in the times before slavery was eradicated. He and his wife Mary returned to England in 1850 and he did some speaking at meetings on the subject; I have seen a snippet on this, but have no further details on his speaking.

George, b. 1822, is my G G Grandfather.

Thank you.

Kent Lookup Requests / St Mary's, Leigh, Kent – MILES and SAXBY before 1820
« on: Sunday 21 February 10 22:29 GMT (UK)  »
My G G G Grandfather is Henry Miles b. 1795. His parents were Richard Miles and Ann Saxby who are buried in the Old Churchyard at St. Mary's in Leigh. I have seen an index on the St. Mary's website listing them as buried there as well, matching dates we have for them.

Is St. Mary's Anglican?

I would like to know if there is more family history available in the church records. I sent an email to the church but apparently the person who did family searches is no longer there, and they are at a loss to help. I would like to know if there are more records for Henry. He was born Dec 12, 1795. He was christened there according to an IGI file on Dec 22. A family note says that he was confirmed by "the Bishop of Kent" about 1812 but I dont know more about that.

Are there more siblings recorded? Are there any records for Richard and Ann? Are Samuel and Elizabeth, also buried in the Churchyard, the parents of this Richard Miles? Are there any other siblings of Richard? If Samuel is the father, is his father named? (it would be interesting if it were Henry Miles of Glouchestershire, 1698-1763 but that would be a big coincidence-however fascinating.) Maiden name of Elizabeth Miles? etc. Who is the John Miles buried there also, a brother of Samuel's?

I would like to know more about the Miles and Saxby families in Leigh, Kent. Henry Miles was a very interesting fellow. He married Mary Hagen in Staines, Middlesex. He converted to Quakerism a few years after his father Richard had passed, and emigrated with his family to Montreal in Canada, stayed for a few years in Canada, then emigrated to Vermont in the United States. He was a mill owner, geologist, amateur scientist, farmer. He was very active in abolition causes in relation to ending slavery and wrote voluminously on the subject and was a believer both in faith and the sciences.

I suspect Henry Miles had a fairly good education. I suspect he came from a learned family. I am curious to find this out as my dad is a scientist and we had never found any scientists in the family tree so far; this makes a very interesting story, to have found so much on Henry so far.

Thank you for any help and suggestions.

I am in New York, so cannot see records at St. Mary's in person.
