MRS A

 :D Hi Avril

How heartwarming to hear from someone living so close to the old origins........as you say, what a wonderful start, thanks to the lovely folk of RootsChat.Com.  As I'm a Beginner, not sure how to link chats in other sections, so forgive me if I'm telling you something you know, but there is more infor re this family in the Beginners' Section and also, my mistake, in the Cornwall Section  (the appropirate St Ives is in Huntingdon, not Cornwall!).

Anyway, lovey to hear a bit about Kirkurd, will have to visit the graveyard etc there sometime in the future.    8)

Also, William Aitken (no date of birth?) married Jane Veitch (no DOB?) at Canongate, Edinburgh, 1816.  They lived at Tofts, Kirkurd, would you know this place?
Their daughter Elizabeth was born 1818, would like the rest of her birthday if poss?

Thank you for 'Entryhead', think you must be right, would love to see this gatelodge also.

Jane Aitken, mother of William (Carpenter) was born 1791, Tofts, Kirkurd.  Would love her date of birth and maiden name?  And, if poss, her parents?   ???

Thanks again
 ;D

   :) Hi Cath 151

Can you please tell me when the Knighthood was bestowed on Robert Aitken and if you know for what reason he was given this honour?  Was it for his services to banking?   ???

Do you know if he travelled to England for it?  or, was it bestowed on him, somehow or other in Bombay?   8)

Thanks

Hello     ::)

Seeking advice please on how to discover date a person received a Knighthood?  This would fall between 1885 and 1920?

And, reason, this honour was bestowed? and, if the person worked in India, would they have had to travel to England, to receive it?    ???

 ???

 :D  Hi Cath151

Grateful thanks, Kiddle must be right, couldn't be anyone else.

And, how clever to work out that she would poss have returned for the birth, to England.
John Ellis Aitken was born in India, if he and Norah Kiddle of St Ives married, and, as you say, not easy to find this record, wonder if they met in India, or in England?
As you say, the marriage probably took place in India?

Have info now that Robert Aitken was with Bank of Scotland in England and left it to join Bank of Bombay in 1885.  Was his son, John Ellis Aitken, also with Bank of Bombay?

Cheers

 :)  Hi Jorose

And, many, many thanks for all the info, especially for the link to google books. "The Cyclopedia of India", how interesting that will be.

I still can't find anything on Caroline, wife of Robert Aitken?

Or, Richard, his brother, b 12/5/1874, West Linton, Scotland, who, I think went out to South Africa in banking?

And their brother, Thomas b. 4/4/1871, West Linton, his life onwards from being a 'Joiner', to his emigration, after, I think marrying Edith Mary Short (trying to find out more about her), to Island of St Helena, as prison chaplain and onwards, to Kingswilliamstown, South Africa, as Baptist Minister.  From Kingswilliamstown, I know a bit.

Many thanks    :D

   ;D Hi Cathy and Kris

What a lot of very helpful info and a great pic is building.........up until now, had no idea that they were to'n and fro'n, was this usual for families who worked in India, and do you think the River Address would possibly have been kept on permanently as a UK address?   ???

Still don't know which bank John Ellis Aitken worked for?  or his father, Robert Aitken?   ???

Also, whatever happened to his sister, Marjory Grace, b India 1898?

Many, many thanks

Ooohhhh,  okay, your new reply................great, so Marjory Grace was with her Dad!
And, at last, Sir Robert,  familyfolklore said he'd been knighted.  Where?  Possibly, India? And, Hyde Park Hotel, Knightsbridge!!!!  Where on earth do their descendants all live now?!

And, Kris, I wonder now why John Ellis Aitkin?  Possible spelling error on passenger lists?  And, Kris, my former colony was South Africa!  and Rev Thomas Aitken and wife Edith Mary Short (I'm seeking more info on Edith Mary Short, were in St Helena for a while, before the Cape.

Hi JOEKAR

Kris of Krisejoint was able to tell me this morning that John Ellis Aitken and wife Norah and daughter, Elizabeth as you so kindly told me, arrived 1936 in Liverpool and were bound for St Ives.
In my ignorance, I thought this was in Cornwall, but it runs out it was St Ives, Doushire, Huntingdonshire  (thanks to Kris).

I's searching now for any info on this family since their arrival and also who Norah was and any details on her.

I've also had a look (thanks to Barbara) on the Families in British India site, but can find no refs there to either Robert Aitken, nor John Elis Aitken and fam.

Many thanks

Hi Barbara

Thank you for the link, much appreciated   :D

Unfortunately, I couldn't find what I was looking for, but a new snippet of info is that John Ellis Aitken and his wife, Norah and daughter, Elizabeth, were going to live in St Ives, Doushire, Huntingdonshire, in 1936.

 ???
Cheers

 :-\ Hi Krisesjoint

Been away checking out the British Families in India site, no joy there.......and, thanks, as I'm from the 'Colonies' myself, please forgive my ignorance, it must be Doushire, as you say.

I've not heard any info re their immigration record, was it just the three of them? i.e. John Ellis Aitken, wife Norah  (any other details on her?) and daughter, Elizabeth?  ???

Is there such a county as Huntingdonshire still?

Would you perhaps know, when John Ellis Aitken's father, Robert Aitken, b. 11/5/1863 sent exactly to India? and who his wife is?  Can't at this stage find anything on Robert after he went to India, just know, from family lore that he was a banker, and so was son John Ellis Aitken.   ???

Thanks
