The weight of probability seems to point to them being the same family.

John is consistent about age, job and place of birth.

However, the name Johanna throws up an anomoly as there is no  death for Julia or a John/Johanna marriage between 71/81.

Ages are only as good as the enumerator is told and what he puts down!!
Julia/Johanna is 43 and loses three years by 81 but is consistent about Ireland.
Young Julia loses four years born in Portsmouth in 71 and Ireland in 1881.

No Julia was born in Portsmouth at all, Reece or Rees. Because of this, and the Irish connection, John may well have been a soldier in the 1850s.

Army records may be a route to go but it's worth having a look in Ireland.
