Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / Re: John Frith in Gt Marlow shewer man
« on: Thursday 10 November 11 00:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Orpheus,

I sort of wondered if that was it, as at the time there was a chair with cane or reed seat cottage industry going on in Gt Marlow , so making skewers might have made use of the scrape wood bits left from that.

Thank you

John

Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / John Frith in Gt Marlow shewer man

In Ancestry's 'Duties paid for apprentices' indentures' there is :

16/12/1802 William Frith appenticed to John Frith, Skewer man of Great Marlow, Bucks.

My question is unless he was selling kebabs what was a skewer man? The writing is very clear, so he definately wasn't a sewer man, i.e. a tailor.

Any ideas

Thanks

Hi Michael,
I can only find 2 Edward Neales born from 1678 to 1710 in Mildenhall,  the PR is quite legible for this period, so I think this is it.

bpt 14/4/1678 s/o Henry
bpt 7/3/1695/96 s/o Daniel

I have the Burial in Mildenhall of:
12/5/1698 of Daniel Neale, there's no other info in the PR
12/6/1728 of widow Alice Neale , again no other info, but as she seems to be the only wife named Alice Neale , so probably this is her.

On looking further back in the Mildenhall PR there are quite a few Neale & Clarkes but no Daniel Neale or Alice Calarke that I can find, though some pages of the PR are in pretty bad shape so they could be there, just it's impossible to read.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Re: Marriage license records 20th century
« on: Sunday 03 July 11 18:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi  Valda,
As the bride in this marriage was only 19 what I was hoping to find was who her guardian was, as there was no father entered in the marriage license.

So I'll be following up your suggestion to contact Westminster archives.

Many thanks
John

I have the marriage certificate of an ancestor who married in the Westminster registry office in 1938. In this certificate it notes they were married by license.

My question is who should I contact to get a copy of this license?

Thanks

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Re: Samuel Gent /? bpt in Bulwell 1790's
« on: Tuesday 21 June 11 20:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi Dave,
The trouble with this Samuel Gent you show was he was born 1783 whereas
the Samuel Gent in the Wood Ditton/Saxon Street in the 1841-71 censuses say he was born 1793-6 and when he died 20/9/1872 his age is given as 78, so again born 1794.

To get his birthdate a few years out seems possible, but 11 years seems too much of a stretch. Also I seem to remember this 1783 Samuel Gent did turn up locally to Selston in the 1841 census and so I had eliminated him from my possibles.

Thanks Merlin & Suz, if you do come across any more info on Samuel Gent I sure would be interested in it, as it has for several years been one of my 'brick walls' that have me stumped.

Hi Sawston,
I take it the Thomas Gent who married Mary Hood, was the son of Samuel & Ann ( nee Payne) bpt 1830 in Wood Ditton, Cambridgeshire. I'm decended from his brother, also a Samuel bpt 15/2/1824 in Wood Ditton.

As I said in my original query Samuel Gent Sr seemed to have arrived out of the blue in Wood Ditton and pretty rapidly had set himself up as a farmer of some 500 acres, mainly it seems raising cattle. The puzzle is all the Gent families I've been able to trace around Selston were either miners or agricultural labourers, so how did Samuel get the wherewithal to set himself up like this?

Best
John
