Does anyone know if the female name 'ELVIRA' is sometimes used instead of the name Elizabeth?

Hi KarenM, thanks for your reply.  I've just used the link you gave me to automatedgenealogy and done some quick searches on both censuses.  I found a few possiblities, but nothing definite at present, so I'll try again. It would have been useful to have had addresses on the censuses for the persons listed.

Hi thanks for replying.

I have no information about how he got to Canada.  He was on the 1881 Wales census living at home and family legend has it that he left home fairly soon after that was taken and left from Cardiff train station.  Family legend also has it that he worked his passage on a ship but we have no knowledge of when and where he sailed from, or when he arrived in Canada. As far as we know he was single but of course he could have met and married someone between leaving home and arriving in Canada. At present it's very much like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Glamorganshire / Battram family - Mountain Ash/Penrhiwceiber
« on: Wednesday 31 March 10 16:36 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find anyone who's related to or knows of the Battram family who lived in Mountain Ash/Penrhiwceiber.  William Battram was stationmaster at Nelson and Penrhiwceiber train stations.  His son Ralph was a GP and worked as a doctor for the Coal Board. Sadly he died in Reading, Berkshire in 2005.  Ralph had a sister Eva who knew my grandmother and he was a regular visitor to a farm in Leckwith.  It's possible their family may be related to my family .  I have done quite a bit of research already but have not yet found the family connection.

Searching for information about my great grandmother's brother - William Lewis -who went to Canada about 1881 aged about 18.  He was Welsh, from a little village called Leckwith, just outside Cardiff, Wales, UK.  For some time he lived in the Langley Prairie area, working a farm with a river running through it.  He was married and it is believed that his brother-in-law may also have lived there as well.  Unfortunately, do not have names of his wives (apparently he was married 3 times!).

Hi lizdb, thanks for your reply.  I've done some research for this family and will be doing more shortly but I'm grateful for any information anyone can pass on to me.  Sadly over the years the many branches of my family have drifted apart. I don't think I'm alone in having this problem, as it seems to be the case with many families around the country.  Since starting my family history research I've discovered that I had many relatives I'd not heard about and not all of them distant, some were very closely related.  Having discovered Rootschat I thought it may be a good way of contacting some of them, especially if they're also researching their family.

Hi Jacquie, thanks for replying so quickly.  Was just going to log off and go to bed as it's 1.30am here in Wales (& we lost an hour last night due to British Summertime), but decided to look to see if I'd had a response to my post.  Thanks for all the places to search for information, I'll be trying them in the morning when I'm more awake.  You asked me for William's parents' names. They are William and Mary Lewis.  William and his parents were all born and lived in a little village called Leckwith just outside Cardiff, Glamorganshire, South Wales.

Glamorganshire / Benjamin Coles Whitchurch Cardiff

Hi, I'm searching for relatives of Benjamin Coles (known as George) who worked at the old Mill Farm, Llanishen, Cardiff.  I think he died in the mid 1920s and that he, his wife and one of his sons are buried in the graveyard of St Isan's Church, Llanishen. He originally came from Somerset and was the brother of my Gt Gt Grandfather Ephraim Coles. He also worked on Cornerswell Farm, Penarth.  I'd be interested in finding out more about him.

Glamorganshire / Re: Mountain Ash?

Unfortunately, the names you have given ring no bells with me.  As some of my family history research has given me connections with Mountain Ash, I thought I may have been able to help.  Some time ago I chanced on a website that had old photos of Mountain Ash but I can't remember what it was called.  I but seem to remember a mention of Aberdare.  I think Mountain Ash is in the Rhondda Cynon Taff area (of course you may know this already), so it may be worth you Googling these areas for information.  If you could find an old photo of a similar date you could compare the background.  Anyway, hope you find what you're looking for.
