we have been wondering about that as well, guess we would need to look back in their tree, perhaps to the family of Louisa and look for a connenction as our guess is that it could be the family name of one of the ladies who married a Picton, otherwise perhaps some close family friend, we have found uncommon first and second names are often taken from those sort of connectons, one cousin of Lila that we found had a second name of the town where his parents met so we know they can come from a variety of connections or for a variety of reasons, problem is no census prior to 41 so perhaps a look through parish records before we find that name in a relative.

Hi again

we have found a death for Joseph Francis Picton, death June quarter 1933 at Staines entry number 3a 13, but still no birth found for him for some reason, yet the 1881 census shows his birth as Clapham, so should be an entry for his birth in England, unless his birth was just not registered by his parents, that did happen on occasion, we have run into that with a few births in our research, and just found marriage and death for some of them

where are you, we are in Queensland Australia

Hullo again tinkertinker.  We did a search on England BMD and found the following
Louisa Fox births found Westminster Jun 1855 1a254
and death Woolwich March 1925 age 69 at Camberwell 1d 833, so we think that is her.
We then found births for Louisa Frances St Geo H Sq June 1879 1a 419
Benjamin Joseph F St Geo H Squ 1a 415 June 1881
Joseph Francis Sep 1883 same place 1a 424 then his death Sep 1883 1a 259
Joseph Dec 1885 Bethnal Green 1c 192 and death Sep 1886 Fulham
Sydney Charles March 1887 St Geo H Sq 1a 462
Ralph Stanley Sep 1891 St Geo H Sq 1a 423
Dorothy Mary Sep 1895 St Geo H Sq 1a 441 and a Dorothy Ada at Watford Dec 1896 3a 615
Fred Campbell born Paddington Sep 1897 1a 35
We then found another 11 male Pictons born March 1897 to Dec 1898 in London, so guess if Fred is not part of your Picton family then any one of those other 11 could be that unnamed male 1898 and you can choose from Alfred, Henry Charles, Joseph, Sydney Herbert, Walter Frank, William James, Albert Vincent, James Gardner, William Joseph, ARthur Thomas, and George William, so there are few there who have "family" names of Joseph  but think we should discount Sydney Herbert as they already have a Sydney, unless he did not survive. Let us know please what you think and we would appreciate any new info you can give us

Hullo tinkertinker, in the 1881 census we found a record  for Joseph Francis Picton, (Joiner, age 27, born Clapham Surrey) with his wife Louisa (age 26, born Westr Middlesex) and daughter Louisa (age 1 born Pimlico Middlesex) We do know that when Frederick Picton married my aunt, their first child, born 1934 in India while he was there in the Army, was named Ralph and their 2nd son they named Peter.  Looks like this may be the same family and the 1st child named after his older brother Ralph who was born 1892. We could not find them in an earlier or later census record so do you know if they stayed in England. Frederick was born last quarter of 1897 at Paddington in London, would like any details at all on this family that you can provide, and any photos of Fred Campbell or his family. Is there a record in the family of his military service and do you have contact with the children Ralph and Peter or their descendants.

If the family of your Joseph Francis Picton is the same family as the man, Frederick Campbell Picton who married my aunt, then  we should tell you something about him, he was born 1897, attended the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, graduated and was commissioned in May 1916, served in WW1 in the Artillery, was awarded a Mentioned in Despatches, then served in India where he married my aunt in 1931, and in the period 1936-39 was involved on the North West frontier with Afghanistan fighting the Afghan tribes that were raiding over the border with that part of India that is now Pakistan.  During WW2 he was a Brigadier and was the Commander Royal Artillery in the 39th Indian Light Division from 1942 to 1943 and he died in 1971 in London. At his marriage in 1931 his father is shown as Joseph Francis Picton, and we are fairly sure this is the same man as you asked about. Please let us know if you find more info that may confirm our thoughts on this.

I have found Joseph Francis Picton in the 1881 England census, and had looked for him as he was the father of the man who married the aunt of my husband.  The son of the Joseph Francis Picton (whose wife was Louise Picton and he was age 27 at the 1881 census, so born abt 1854) was Frederick Campbell Picton and he married in 1931 in India. If this is the same Joseph Francis Picton you seek, will you let me know, as Joseph would be related to my husband by the marriage of his son to the ancestor of my husband.

Armed Forces / Re: Which Battallion in the Rifle Brigade + S.W.B

I am also looking for some details of a relative who served in the 4th Bn of The Rifle Brigade, but not having much luck.  Paid Findmypast for his service record, but they gave me five pages, and those five pages give me little info, 2 pages are proceedings of the board that decided to discharge him on medical grounds, one page shows he enlisted 1857 and another shows his pay record for his almost 20 years of service, but nothing provided on his movements to India on two occasions, his movement and any involvement in China for 3 years, in fact as a service record is just has so much missing that should be there, and we can find no way to get more, can anybody point us in the direction of where we may be able to find the full service record, tried the National Archives of England, but can find a contact point for them and Findmypast seems to have the monopoly on the provision of military records and we just dont know where to go next. Can give all details we have so far by pm to anybody who can help us, just pm us.
