It says '57 Brown's Buildings'. I have attached a screenshot.

I found the same family in 1851 (eventually!) in the Hilltown.

Wow! Thank you so much for your replies. Here's me thinking everyone would be in bed so I could wait til morning to check lol

In answer to your questions...

Teresa Nicoll 26/01/1865

Parents...

William Nicoll, Sacking Weaver
Mary Nicoll m/s Simson(Simpson)

1871 Census

197 Scouringburn, Parish of Liff & Benvie

William 40 Mill Worker
Mary 40
Jane Ann 12 Mill Worker
Alexander 10 Scholar
William 8
Teresa 6
Mary 4

1861 Census (still working on)

Births of other children (Still working on)

I've not got a lot in this family yet as I'm just beginning to look properly into them and the name variants are endless!

Not insulted at all!! Will try and attach a screenshot. I've taken it to read 'Bruce's' as the 'r' looks like one written above in the word 'January'. Apologies if I put the commas in the wrong places, that's just where I felt they naturally should have been.

Thanks again!

Angus (Forfarshire) / Bruce's Land, Mill's West Wind, Dundee?
« on: Thursday 06 July 17 21:42 BST (UK)  »
Good evening all,

I'm hoping someone out these can help me.  On my GGGrandmothers birth register (b.1865), her 'where born' reads, 'Bruce's Land, Mill's West Wynd, Dundee'. I have had a long look online and can find information on various 'Land's' in the city but I can't seem to find anything on Bruce's Land. I can find a little information on Mill's West Wind but it's all very vague. I may be looking in the wrong places!

Can anyone help? I'd love to know where in the city it is/was and any information about it.

Thank you in advance,

Jenni

Yes, they are in Fife, Scotland.

It won't let me attach a picture on my phone so will transcribe it then post a picture later.

Birth (1931)

"Jessie McQueen Sorley Duncan
or Gallagher"

Parentage

"____________________
____________________
Betsy Black Sorley Duncan
or Gallagher (millworker)
Wife of John Gallagher,
(Coal miner) to whom she was
married 12th November 1921
at Dunfermline"

It's the gap above the mothers name that gets me. I'm thinking along the same lines as you, Annie, that she had a child with someone other than her husband (I've confirmed the marriage).

Thanks for your advice so far!

I've seen the marriage register and she is a 17 year old spinster. Her father also carries her maiden name. I can understand her using both her maiden and married names. It's just the first time I've come across it so I find it unusual. Especially when her daughter seems to have the same surname of 'Duncan or Gallagher'. I need to find her other children's birth documents and see what they say I think.

Thanks.

Good evening all,

I am currently knee deep in a puzzle involving my great-grandmother. On my Granny's birth certificate, my Granny is named Jessie M S Duncan or Gallagher.  In the parents box there are two empty lines then it names her mother Betsy B S Duncan or Gallagher, wife of John Gallagher etc etc. This confused me initially and while investigating this i have noticed my great-grandmother used the surname 'Duncan or Gallagher' through the documents i found and even her death record has this.

Can anyone give me any clue as to why she would use both surnames together? And also, i have a suspicion my Granny may have been illegitimate, it does not say this but the gap before her mothers name makes me wonder. Can anyone advise?

Thanks in advance!

Mary was married in 1855 (in Dundee) and was 26 years old. She died in 1918 (in Dundee) and was 81 years old. I have both of these documents but the ages have confused me as they are very different. I haven't found a birth yet due to this.

Her name is Mary Simpson, father is Patrick Simpson and mother is Jane Ann McMahon. Not sure about religion (I'm new to this side of things) but Mary was married in a Catholic church if that helps?

Thanks for your help!

Thats the first i thought but i can only seem to find loose mentions of it so wasn't sure if there was a spelling mistake or something.

The only thing Google comes up with is it is mentioned in a book called 'Historical sketches of Monaghan : from the earliest records to the Fenian movement'.
