Essex / Re: Burial at Latchingdon in 1841

I rang Essex Record Office to enquire if they have the chuch registers for Latchingdon cum Snoreham, St Michael and they do have them and the lady I spoke to is going to look into it the church registers not being catalogued on SAEX so hopefully they will be available on there soon.
In the meantime, I am going to send for copies of the burial at Maldon, St Mary the Virgin, and the baptism at Latchingdon, St Michael.

Thanks again for all help & advice offered and gratefully received.

Hello Ronnie and keldon.

Thank you so much for your help.
Very interesting indeed - I think your info shows up the occasional short comings of the new Familysearch as they had Eliza baptised 7 June 1841.

I shall be having a really good look on the Links you gave me this evening, keldon they look fascinating - I have a nightschool class at 7pm so it will be a late night for me tonight.

Thanks again.
Regards,
Shirley

Hi findem.

I have a possible church - MALDON, St Mary the Virgin.

Do you think it might be the one?

Shirley

Hi findem

A million apologies for my huge mistake :-[ - the NBI entry was LATCHINGDON, St Mary the Virgin. (senior moment and lack of local knowledge which has caused you to waste your valuable time - so very sorry)

The 1841 census has Thomas LEWING, (Ag Lab) aged 55; Mary LEWING, aged 40; Sarah LEWING, aged 10; Mary LEWING aged 5; John LEWING aged 3; and an Un-named infant living at Hyde Marsh, Latchingdon, Essex.
The enumerator had put a "Y" in the "whether born in this county" column for everyone.

This fits with my LEWING children who were baptised in parishes in the Hoo Peninsular, Kent, except for an Eliza LEWING who I found baptised 7 Jun 1841 at Latchingdon with Snoreham (no name of church) who I assume was the un-named infant. I believe Eliza was buried 9 March 1842 at Hoo, St Werburgh aged 9 months. The family then stayed in Kent.
I am assuming the family went to Essex to find work.

Another problem I have  is I cannot find Thomas LEWIN/LEWING's death in the GRO Index in 1941 so I can't go down that route.

Best wishes,
Shirley

hello again findum

I've just looked at my NBI v3 disc (don't know why I hadn't thought of it sooner) and it says Thomas LEWIN, aged 58, buried 25 September 1841 at Latchingford, St Mary the Virgin, which has confused me even more!
I live in Lancashire and my knowledge the geography of Essex is very scant.

Regards,
Shirley

Hi findem.

Thank you very much for your reply.

I've just been looking at Christ Church on the crouchvalleychurches.co.uk website and it says that Christ Church celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2006 so it appears that it wouldn't have been open for the burial I am looking for.

I shall have to keep looking.
Thanks again.
Shirley :)

Could anyone tell me which was the Parish Church of Latchingdon with Snoreham 25th September 1841?

I am trying to trace a burial for a Thomas LEWIN and I don't know which church to request a Look-Up for on the Look-Up Request Board.

I think it may be St Michael's but I don't want to waste anyone's time with the wrong request.
Many thanks,
Shirley

Hi Lelly.

Ladydot doesn't drive but she has discovered that a local coach company did a Leicestershire 3 day tour this year so she is hoping that it will do the same next year.
One of the days included a visit to Ashby de la Zouch so it would be great if she could get on that trip.
Thanks again for your help.
Kind regards,
Shirley x

Hi Lelly.

Thank you so very much for your time & your endeavours.  :-*
It is very much appreciated.
It is a pity the gravestone has not survived the years but my friend ladydot can safely assume that her ancestors were buried in the churchyard (church burial register) and she hopes to visit the church next year to pay her respects.

Best regards,
Shirley x
