Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Who lived in a House like this?

Yes I wondered if that was a driveway but decided it looked more like a large path leading down the garden. But I may change my mind again tomorrow  ::)

I've only just noticed that there is a bay window on the left hand side of the house - which was another reason I thought it might be the back, as the front is more likely to have bay windows matching either side isn't it?

Also the guttering spread across the wall for some reason makes me think of the back of the house.

This looks to me more like the back of the house, with a large patio/seating area and the walls around it, and the steps down to the garden. For such a big house it doesn't look very ornate either.

Dublin / Re: Van man
« on: Friday 17 May 19 18:21 BST (UK)  »
My ggrandfather was a vanman in Edinburgh. He delivered groceries for the local grocer shop with his horse and covered cart(van).  He actually died after an accident on his van: his horse took fright and reared, overtuning the van and crushing my ggf. The incident was reported in the paper, which is how I know who he worked for and what happened.

If you google "delivery van and horse 1933" hopefully you will get some images

Carmarthenshire / Re: Looking for place in Carmarthen

It may be worth considering that Penlow/Penlaw is actually Penlan Road, which was the site of the Union Workhouse.

It may be that the lady went into the workhouse to have her baby, as there were no other medical facilities available at the time, unless she could afford to pay a doctor. From about 1900 I believe that if babies were born there the address was recorded on the certificate as "1 Penlan Road" to avoid any future stigma for the child.

Thank you for the suggestion Maiden Stone - never really thought to do a search before. Found lots of pics like the one Stan linked earlier, which was much like I had always thought my great grandfather's van would be. I know who the grocer was that he worked for, so maybe I'll eventually find one with his name on!

My great grandfather in Scotland was described as a van man/ grocer's van man from 1882 until he died in 1910. I don't know what his 'van' was like but he drove a horse and van to deliver for the local grocer. We know about the horse because he died from wounds sustained when a loud noise caused his horse to bolt and his van overturned. The accident is described in great detail in the inquest and in newspaper articles. I think that someone else was close to the truth when they suggested that a van would be enclosed to protect the goods and a cart is more open

The main reason I fix my photos is to get a better look at people I didn't know.

My mother was given a picture of her grandparents, who she never knew. It was a lovely photo but  had a huge crease down through both people and her grandfather had lost most of his waistcoat. It was also a bit dark and their features weren't very clear.

Recently I fixed the crease and gave my great grandfather back his waistcoat, lightened the photo a bit and the difference was amazing. He was the image of one of my brothers! Same features, same build, same quirky smile. Probably the same colouring, but it's difficult to tell. It explained where that brother got his looks from -  he is stocky and blond while the rest of us are slim and dark.

We had never noticed the similarity before, mainly I think because the damage to the photo was distracting and the features were hidden in the gloom. We still have the original, but now we also have one where the people can be seen clearly.
