Coming back to the original question though, any signs of a death certificate for George?

The 1861 census indicates young Eliza is out of the area in St Mary's Ward. This looks like it might be her, age 14, although it says born England and not Jersey....

The census entry posted earlier in this thread has Eliza seemingly crossed out, but gives her place of birth as Jersey.

Interesting ... Still a big gap between the children.

Perhaps, though given the birthdate that I have for Eliza as 1848, she would be 13 rather than 18, so only 9 years between her and Cecelia. There are 9 years between my eldest brother and my youngest. Probably arguing from silence, but it makes me wonder if Elizabeth had multiple miscarriages in the intervening years.

She is likely Elizabeth's child from a first marriage; she is noted as a servant and living out of limits, so she is old enough to be on her own.

I have George and Elizabeth getting married in St Helier, Jersey in 1845, with George being born in 1822, making George 39 at the time of the 1861 census. Though that census 27 is pretty clear.

1861 Canadian Census puts the family in St. Lawrence Ward, Hamilton, Wentworth County, Canada West (now Ontario, formerly Upper Canada):

Moyes, Geo., mason, b. England, Church of England, aged 27, married
Moyes, Eliz., b. England, aged 35, married
Moyes, Eliza, b. Jersey, aged 18?, servant (residence out of limits = St. Mary's Ward)
Moyes, Cecilia, b. Upper Canada, aged 4

The age gap between the girls and Elizabeth's age being older than George suggests a second marriage for Elizabeth, and that the daughter Eliza may be from her first marriage.

Not sure about the age of George being 27 with an 18 or 13 year old daughter, unless he was very precocious!

Canada / Death in Canada?

In researching my 3xgreat-grandmother Eliza Moyes I discovered that her father seems to have died in Canada.

Her father was George Moyes, a stonemason, born in 1822 in North Moulton, Devon, and his father was John Moyes. In 1845 George was living in St Helier, Jersey, and married Elizabeth Hill (b.1824), they had 2 daughters, Eliza (b.1848) and Celia (b.1857), who was born in Upper Canada.

In the 1871 Channel Island census, Elizabeth and the daughters are back living on Jersey, but no sign of George. Also, just for interest, boarding at the same house as Celia is one John Reese, my 3xgreat grandfather, who had recently retired from the Army, having most recently been stationed in.....Canada.

Can anyone help fill in the blanks as to what happened to George, and if possible who his mother was?

Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone else working on their family tree has any links with the following people?

Alexander Ogston (b 1701 d 1771) who was married to Ann Scott (unsure on exact dates)
William Ogston (b around 1749 d 1836) who was married to Margaret Robertson.
William also had 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Their names are Alexander Ogston, James Ogston, Margaret Ogston, Jean Ogston, John Ogston.

William and Margaret had 4 children. Their names were Mary, Alexander, Anne, and William.

If anyone has any links to these people in there family tree or any information that would help my research it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ricki Ogston

I have a Joan Ogston (1873-1953) who was my great grandmother, married to Alexander Scott and they lived in Fraserburgh.

Joan's mother was Elizabeth Ogston (b.1840), father unknown, and Elizabeth was a daughter of William Ogston (1779-1857) and Isabella Cadger.

William's parents were Alexander Ogstone (b. 1741) and Christian Marr.

Any connections there to your line?

Burial;
CHARITY ANN Hackney, 17 Apr 1838, age 64, abode New St, Deptford
Her Husband James was likely buried 15 Nov 1824 age 57, abode No.2 Deptford Green, Deptford
(it appears they had no children)

CHARITY ANNE Fowell Bapt 31 Jul 1774, St Mary Magdalene, Woolwich
(birth 12 Jul 1774)
Parents EDMUND/CHARITY

The Parents married 25 Jan 1771 but I will let you find that yourself as its more fun.

All on FreeREG

Well, that's fun eh!

If I remember my law correctly, given the Marriage Act of 1753, it just means that Edmund's Charity was under 21. I don't think Charity was pregnant at the time, as their first child was born in Feb 1772, unless she lost the child early in the pregnancy and was soon pregnant again.

Interesting, interesting though.

So I have run into something of a brick wall.

Mary is my 4x great grandmother and something of an enigma.

From trees I have seen she was born in 1820, but I recently found a record of a woman with the same name marrying in Lee, Kent in 1831. I am making the assuming here that the name Mary Fowell Benoist is not exactly a common name.

She married Richard Thompson, and they had a son, Richard James Benoist Thompson in 1834.

Can anyone clear up the year of her birth, and her parents?

Update, seems Mary was born in 1808, which makes way more sense than an 11 year marrying in 1831.
