The Common Room / Probate
« on: Thursday 21 September 23 20:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks, can anyone advise what exactly is Probate and what it involves.  I have found a Probate Record for a relation of mine but I know she died with no family.  Does this mean that her estate would go to the Government.  There are no names/recipients mentioned in the record.
Thanks in advance.

It would be a good idea to take a little snip of the items you are interested in and attach it to a post here on Rootschat,  so others can see what what is happening.

You could add it to a reply on this post, or on a new post on this board
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/handwriting-deciphering-recognition/

Include a few lines before and after your entries for handwriting comparison.
Thank you, will try.  Not very good with all this technology.  Will ask son for help.  Many thanks.

The Common Room / Abbreviations on Passenger Lists
« on: Monday 21 August 23 21:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone, does anyone know what "Bha" is on a passenger list under the column heading "Country of intended future permanent residence"     Ship was arriving in Liverpool from St John's Brunswick.  There were 3 of my relations marked on it in the column for "Scotland" then bracketed together was "Bha".  Hope I've explained this properly!
Many thanks in advance

I don't have phone numbers, would you be able to post a link at all??  Do you need access to newspaper publications?

I was looking in the newpapers on FindMyPast (same database as British Newspaper Archive). No success with Levack but WEL 9790 brought up a couple of hits. I'm guessing that Maddy's finds are in Newspapers.com (?)
ShaunJ -- thanks for replying.  I may have to consider subscribing.

There is an advertisement in 1939 for Sister Levack:

"Colonic Lavage - Sister Levack, 77 Marylebone High Street, WEL 9790"
Thursday,  Aug. 24, 1939
Publication: The Daily Telegraph

Indeed.  Didn't think I'd find out anything.. but found out loads!  This is a great forum.  I come on here when I'm absolutely stuck, otherwise I like to plough through things myself, but I was stuck.  I only have access to Scotlands People and Ancestry but sort of muddle through... until as I say I get stuck, so many thanks.  I'm off for the weekend now .. heading to the Orkney Islands for the weekend as it's their County Show.  Have a good weekend.
Gollach.
Hi Maddy, Oh my that is a find!  Didn't spot that one... and there's another piece of the puzzle.  Well done you.  That did make me laugh.   How ahead of the times was that!  Entrepreneur or what..  not sure it would have continued given the date / war looming but good on her.

Kind regards

I'm afraid I chuckled too when I first read the ad. Very now!  ;D

I was obviously looking in the wrong places!

Now we have the phone number I have found a couple of similar ads in the Marylebone Mercury and the Kensington Post in October 1938.
Hi Shaun, I don't have phone numbers, would you be able to post a link at all??  Do you need access to newspaper publications?   Sorry Shaun I've just realised it's the short numbers in the advert  ::) silly me.
Thanks

Jane was also enrolled as a midwife. Could she perhaps have been offering private anteatal care to expectant women too?
Hi scotmum, yes I noticed that too.  Jane did her initial training I think in Scotland as a midwife, then moved to England.. she remained on the Nursing Register for many years.  Many thanks, everyone has been so helpful here.  What a find with everyone's help.  It's very kind of everyone to reply.

I see the entries in the Nursing Register giving her address as the Levack Clinic, 77 Marylebone High Street. But I can't see any other references to the Levack Clinic. Nothing in contemporary phone books, no newspaper ads or mentions, nothing in Google Books.

Thank you Shaun for helping with this.  Very much appreciated.  It's so kind of you.
