Morning to you

In this most poignant of weeks, I recently obtained the only photo of my gt grandfather Joseph Eakins, of Royal Irish Rifles, who was killed in action at the Somme on 6/9/16, from an old Belfast Newspaper taken at the time he went to France in 1914.  Being the only photo we have of him is so precious, but I was wondering if he could be freshened up in any way, as the photo does have some pixels showing from the print?
Most grateful for any kind help.
Kind regards
Mcvitie

Angus

Many thanks for this extra info - very helpful. I've also recently made contact with Commun Eachdraidh and  they sound very promising, having knowledge of my connections in Benbecula.

Cheers

McVitie.

Angus,

Many thanks for your reply and wonderful story about my MacRae ancestors. I'll get straight onto Amazon to have a look for Craig's book - incidentally J L Campbell's book was a good read even if the MacRae's story were no relations!

All the best Angus and thanks again for your usual informed reply.

Hello Angus

Thanks for the marriage details - I did eventually manage to locate what I gather was their actual m cert and it is as exactly you say. I tried finding out a little more about his role as the miller but haven't yet gathered a great deal to date. Do you recall recommending a book called A Very Civil People by John Lorne Campbell? Well I recently purchased a copy as I recall you said that Mary Macrae's family are mentioned in one of the chapters - am I right in thinking that Peigi Macrae who is interviewed in the book page 50 in 1952 is a relative of Mary's? Could she have been her sister as the dates seem to fit as Mary died in the early 1950s?
Many thanks
McVitie

Many thanks for keeping this post 'alive' - I will have a good look at the census stuff and see if I can make any connections. I did find out that my Mary Eakins was born circa 1878 to Patrick Devlin and Ellen Neil (O'Neill) so I reckon Mary would be circa 22 in 1901 census...

Well hello to you 'cousin' MacMunks! :D

We both share the same gt grandfather but I'm guessing your a descendant of Alexander's first marriage to Catherine MacCuish?

I've done a fair amount of research on our Maclean's history and have one or two documents I've drawn up that I'd be happy to share with you. I've also got a great summary tree from a Canadian researcher, Blair Macaulay, whose roots hail from NU and I can forward you his notes on our Macleans - please send me your PM ad I'll email to you.

Kind regards

McVitie
