The Common Room / Re: criminal records

A word of caution. The trial could have taken place anywhere - prisoners were sometimes sent a long way.

I found a man in HMP Borstal (Rochester, Kent) in the 1881 census. Eventually I discovered he had been given 7 years at the Quarter Sessions in Stafford in 1876.

A good line of research is to try the 19th century newspapers collection for a report of the trial. Once you've got the place and date of a trial, you can then access the TNA records with confidence.

good luck,
Martin

Thanks Mack,
That's very likely to be him. (No parent's names which would be the clincher).
I had a look at the Great War Forum thread. He was my grandfather's cousin, but I don't have a picture of him yet, so I'll see if I can find one before contacting them.

Here's a double Censuswhack - 1851 and 1861;
a FreeBMDwhack - Birth Q4 1844;
and a hilarious name.

I proudly present:  Philetus Fish

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Re: Oxford Parish Regs - JAMES

Hi Debbie,

Thanks for this. Not bad news, just interesting detail.

The certificate for Thomas's first marriage in 1841 just says 'deceased' for the groom's father. However, the certificate for his second marriage in 1856 says 'Bulkeley James, library clerk'. Seems a bit of creative fiction on his part!
Are there anything other children of Harriet?

My grandmother's brother, Joseph Smith, married Vilo Lilian Playford in 1900.
Vilo is an unusual name and prone to mistranscription, giving these first name Censuswhacks :-

1891 Searching with 'Vils'
1901 (PRO) Searching with 'Vils Sm*' (search engine won't allow forename only search)

1901 (Ancestry) finds three ladies called Vilo, but only one Vilo Smith
