Thanks for your messages Jennifer.
The family on the 1901 census looks a possibility, do you have them on the 1911 census?

Robert Melia b. 1922 never mentioned siblings but the six children you mention could have been his brothers and sisters. Do you have any names? If there were 7 children it might explain why Robert said he went into care after his mother died.[But not with Barnardos]

The address on Robert`s birth certificate is `Brookside`,Kerrs Field, Moreton Road, Woodchurch, Wirral. I can only assume that they were all living there. A rather `colourful` district I understand!!

Albert Melia , father, occupation Dock Checker which does match with his occupation on Sarah`s Death Certificate.

So any more ideas to further my research?

Thanks for your input. I`m now fairly certain that the Briscoe/Tait connection is unlikely.

I do now have a copy of the Sarah Melia that I have been researching on behalf of a friend whose late husband was Robert Melia, Sarah`s son.
Sarah Melia died 4th Oct 1933 107 Rice Lane. [My research shows that this was West Derby Union Workhouse Hospital].  Age 43 years
Her home address is 65 Belmont Road Liverpool. Wife of Albert Melia, Ship owners cargo checker of same address, widower of deceased.
I have discovered that there was Belmont Road Workhouse at No. 42 Belmont Road could No. 65 have been part of The Workhouse?
Robert Melia said that he had been in Barnardos after his mothers death but there is no record of him there. But I notice that there was a Shaw Street Boys Home and Fazakerley Cottage Homes nearby where he might have been placed. Would there be any records for these Homes?

I still can`t find a likely marriage for Albert and Sarah if indeed they were actually married!!
Anyone able to help with any more info. on Albert please? Maybe his death. Any help to further my research would be welcome.

Thanks, Cyndy

Lancashire / Briscoe/Tait marriage
« on: Saturday 04 October 14 16:53 BST (UK)  »
Have found a possible marriage of SARAH BRISCOE born 1889/90 to James and Mary Briscoe to a WALTER TAIT in 1915. Is this the same SARAH named as mother to Robert Herbert Melia b.1922[now diseased] on his birth certificate? The birth certificate shows father Albert Melia , mother Sarah Melia  nee Briscoe. I have been unable to find any marriage for Sarah and Albert and if Sarah HAD been married to Walter Tait why would she have reverted to her maiden name Briscoe? I believe that Walter Tait may have been killed during WW1.I believe that Sarah died in 1933 but I have been unable to discover what happened to her son Robert after her death. I have also been unable to find any information about Albert Melia named as the father on Roberts birth certificate.
Any ideas please?

Canada Lookup Request / Wartime marriage
« on: Thursday 05 June 14 10:45 BST (UK)  »
This is a request on behalf of a friend researching her late husbands family history.

Royal Airforce records for ROBERT H MELIA [deceased] show a marriage to a ISABELLE RACHEL FOSTER on 1/7/1944 at Milltown, Charlotte, N.B. A further address for Mrs MELIA is given as 341, Ominica St. Moose Jaw,Sask. Is it possible to find out any more about Robert Melia`s first wife in particular if there is a record of her family and her death or divorce?
Robert Mel1a seems to have been in Canada with the Airforce from 1943 so maybe there are some more records to discover.

Robert Melia`s full birth certificate shows

Birth 10/1/1922 Reg.17th Feb. 1922 Wirral Cheshire

Mother Sarah Melia formally Briscoe

Res. Brookside, Kerrs Field, Moreton

Father Albert Melia occ. Dock Checker

According to this info. Sarah and Albert were married at the time of Robert`s birth though I suppose Robert may NOT have been his child. That might explain why Robert was placed in the care of Barnardos when his mother died. Would it have been possible for Sarah to have lied about her marital state? I haven`t been able to find a likely marriage between Sarah and Albert so far. Any ideas please?

Hi again,
Your last message re. the Briscoe family on the 1901 census looks promising. Having spoken to Robert`s widow this morning she mentioned that he had told her that his mother, Sarah, was in her 40s when she died. This of course didn`t fit with the Sarah Briscoe born in 1903 you discovered earlier. As the other siblings seem to match names that Robert had mentioned then this last family looks promising.
Thanks again,  Cyndy

Hi Everyone and many thanks on behalf of my friend for getting her search off to a good start.

My understanding is that she does not have a full copy of Roberts birth certificate so now she can send off for this. She is also planning to contact Barnardos to see if their records can help.

She tells me that Robert`s father Albert was a soldier in a Scottish regiment as he remembers him visiting the family home wearing a kilt as part of his uniform. She thinks his father died/was killed during WW2.
Robert remembers his mother being in hospital for several months before she died and at this time he was looked after by a neighbour. Immediately after his mothers funeral he was sent to Barnardos in Liverpool. Is it possible to find Sara Briscoe`s death around 1931/32 in Woodchurch?

Robert was married three times, once divorced, second time widowed.

Again many thanks, Cyndy

Thanks for your help.
I suppose Albert could have served in WW1 and still have been a serving soldier at the time of Robert`s birth in 1922. He obviously wasn`t able/available to care for his son when Sarah died which is no doubt why he was put into the care of Barnardo`s. Interestingly Robert ran away from Barnardo`s when he was about 12 and hid on board a ship bound for America. He was discovered before the ship left the harbour and was returned to Barnardo`s and later fostered. Following the advice of his foster father, Robert later served in the RAF.
