Durham / Re: WEAR, John Harold born 7 August 1900
« on: Sunday 21 June 20 10:26 BST (UK)  »
Thomas Hall Reed is a bit of a mystery.

John obviously knew his birth name on enlistment, but I assume was not in contact with his mothers family at that time, or why not put his mother down as next of kin.

I thought maybe the 1911 Seaton Carew Needhams had died and Thomas Hall Reed was a relative of theirs (assuming they are the right family) but I can't see a connection, their relatives are all from Yorkshire and South Durham. Plus they are alive long after he enlisted.

An Arthur and Mary Needham are on the Electoral Roll at 7 Railway Cottages, Blackhall, from 1920 to 1931. A Joseph Needham briefly appears with them from 1923 to 1924.

There is a Railway Union Record for Arthur Needham, Plate Layer, joined West Hartlepool branch. 26/9/13. Retired 15/1/36. Transferred to Glasgow branch in November 1946. Died 24/6/1949. Scotlands People has a death of an Arthur Needham age 78 in Partick in 1949.

I wonder if Thomas Hall Reed was a relative of Johns father.

Alan.

There is a John Harold Wear on the Electoral Register for 9 Argyle Street Newcastle from 1925 to 1926, along with a Benjamin and Margaret Wear. From 1925 to 1929 he's also on the absent voters list at that address, based at RAF Eastchurch, Sheernesss, Kent. His Service number 239935 is the same as on the boy mechanic records. The date of birth on the boy mechanic records is 7 August 1900, Monkwearmouth, so its the right chap.

Benjamin and Margaret Wear continued living 9 Argyle Street into the 1950's. In 1939 Benjamin says he's a House Agent, born 27 Dec 1889, Margaret born 23 Jan 1876. Both are down as single. Benjamin Wear appears to be the son of John Wear and Sarah Ramshaw, born South Shields. He has an older sister Margaret, born South Sheilds about 1876. Margaret Weir in 1881 census.

A family tree on Ancestry has this Margaret Wear also being the one with the Glen Family in South Shields in 1901, then living with her brother Benjamin at 9 Argyle Street, dying in Newcastle in 1952.

There is this Joseph Alfred Needham and family in Seaton Carew in 1911 on Familysearch. Hope the link works. Joseph Alfred Needham, b. 26 July 1901, Hartlepool, is on a list of Wesleyan Methodist Ministers.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWHN-3CV

I wonder if the Arthur Needham, Boarder, age 10, b. Fulwell is your man. He's not with them in 1901.

St Oswald was a Chapel of Ease in Wall Township in St John Lee Parish. Probably didn't do baptisms, just a place of worship for locals who couldn't travel easily to the Parish Church.

Hope this link works 1828 Whites Directory.

Durham / Re: Marriage Gustard/Young
« on: Friday 25 October 19 12:00 BST (UK)  »
The marriage of Margaret Ann Gustard, Dec qtr 1865 Auckland is to a Joseph Mason. Joseph Young (mmn Gustard) is only born a year later.

There are 2 Joseph Youngs born around the right time in Easington District, June qtr 1846 (mmn Nevison), the one who went to USA, and Sep qtr 1845 (illegitimate).

There is a marriage at Monk Heselton, 22 April 1848, Clement Mason (fathers name Clement Mason) and Anne Young (fathers name John Young).

This is them in 1851, birth places are all given as the place they are currently living (Longbenton) but they have a Joseph Mason age 6 with them.

1851, Gosforth Row, Longbenton
Clement Mann (Mason), 22, Coal Miner Hewer, b. Longbenton,
Anne Mann (Mason), wife, 26, b. Longbenton,
Joseph Mann (Mason), son, 6, b. Longbenton,
Clement Mason, lodger, 54, Coal Miner Hewer, b. Longbenton,
HO107; Piece: 2411; Folio: 22

Can't find them in 1861, but in 1871 they are in Sacriston, same village as Joseph Young and family.

1871, 7 Staffordshire Row, Sacriston.
Clement Mason, 44, Coal Miner, b. Durham, Lumley,
Ann Mason, wife, 50, b. Northumberland, North Shields,
Clement Mason, son, 20, Coal Miner, b. Northumberland, Cramlington,
John Mason, son, 17, Coal Miner, b. Durham, Monkwearthmouth,
Thomas Mason, son, 14, Coal Miner, b. Durham, Monkwearmouth,
Matthew Mason, son, 12, Coal Miner, b. Durham, Seaham,
James Smith, nephew, 30, Coal Miner, b. Northumberland, Holywell
RG10; Piece: 4990; Folio: 118; Page: 30

Then in 1881 Clement and Ann Mason and family are living on the same street as Joseph and Mary Young and family. Joseph and Mary are actually lodging with Clement and Anns son John Mason and family.

1881, Allendale Cottages, Medomsley,
John Mason, 27, Coal Miner, b. Durham, Sunderland,
Ann Mason, wife, 31, b. Yorkshire, Streatlam.
Clement Mason, son, 7, b. Durham, Chester le Street,
John Mason, son, 5, b. Durham, Sacriston,
Edward Mason, son 2, b. Durham, Medomsley,
Joseph Young, boarder, 38, Coal Miner, b. Durham,
Mary Young, wife, 27, b. Durham, City of Durham,
James Young, son, 7, b. Durham, Sacriston,
Thomas Young, son, 6, b. Durham, Chester le Street.
RG11; Piece: 4950; Folio: 42; Page: 77

1881, Allendale Cottages, Medomsley,
Clement Mason, 58, Coal Miner, b. Durham, Lumley,
Ann Mason, 61, b. Northumberland, North Shields,
Clement Mason, 29, Coal Miner, b. Northumberland, Cramlington,
Thomas Mason, 25, Coal Miner, b. Durham, Monkwearthmouth,
Joseph Mason, 14, Coal Miner, b. Durham, Tudhoe,
RG11; Piece: 4950; Folio: 50; Page: 94

I suspect the 14 year old Joseph Mason is actually Joseph Young who isn't with his parents. No relationships shown. Tudhoe is about a mile from Spennymoor.
