Canada / Re: Help finding John Donald Robertson in Quebec
« on: Thursday 02 July 15 12:20 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for your reply, Sandra.
I'd found the Ocean Arrivals Form 30A and tried to attach it, but it was removed from my post.  It's definitely him as all the info fits.  Unfortunately, even though he stated he was married on the form there is no record in the family bible about a wife and I haven't found a convincing marriage registration for him in the UK.

Thanks very much for the information on BMDs etc. I will have a look at the site you suggested! There are a few possibilities on Canadian Electoral rolls, so who knows?

Thanks again,

finta

Canada / Help finding John Donald Robertson in Quebec
« on: Thursday 02 July 15 10:25 BST (UK)  »
Please can someone help trace John Donald Robertson in (probably) Quebec, Canada?  Apart from the Ocean Arrivals form (attached), WW1 record and a family bible giving death date, I have no information.

b. 1896 Jarrow, Durham, England.
d. 13/01/1955 Canada.

Thank you for looking,

finta

Armed Forces / 1st Durham Royal Engineers (Volunteers)
« on: Thursday 02 July 15 08:42 BST (UK)  »
I would very much appreciate some help identifying a major from the 1st Durham Royal Engineers (Volunteers).

I can't upload the photo as it's from an email and is too many KB to upload here.  I do not know how to reduce it.

The man I would like to identify is a major.
The date is between 1881 (formation of unit) and 1901 (the Queen's head is visible on helmet and uniform).
The man's name I am hoping to find is ? ROBERTSON.  He was living in Hebburn/Jarrow at the time of the photo.

If there are any Army Lists I would be very grateful for a look up.

Thank you,

Finta

I'm UK based and have information regarding HWH Robertson's family in Jarrow and further back in Scotland. I know nothing of his death but would be interested to find out!

Glad to find a contact after my original post 5 years ago,

Finta

Good evening,
Hugh Wiliam Hubert Robertson emigrated to the U.S. On the Carpathia. Are you a relative?

Yes I am a relative....if our HWH Robertson is the same man. My HWH's father was the oldest son (of 8 boys) and my grandfather was the youngest.  In my family Hugh William Hubert Robertson was born in 1885 in Jarrow UK to Hugh Robertson and Sarah Ann Rowland.  He sailed on the Carpathia on 26 July 1904 to New York and met his uncle (William Robertson) at the Hotel Roland, 59th Street.  Uncle William had already emigrated and settled in Massachusetts.

I have a copy of HWH Robertson's US Draft Registration Card for WW1.  Also a copy of the ship's manifest for the Olympic where he arrived at Southampton UK 1923 to visit his dying father.  He returned to New York a month later (on the Olympic) - residence given as Oakland USA.  He was married and wife lived on Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, Mass.  It states his intention was to join wife in Boston and thence leave for California.  From this date I have no reliable info.  I have looked at US censuses but cannot be sure of identifying him accurately.

Are you a relative?  If you are, and would rather exchange info by the private messaging service on Rootschat that's fine with me. Messageboard is fine too.

Thank you Stanmapstone and Alexander!

If this is my relative, I guess he was punished for destitution.

Thanks again,

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Deciphering an offence on criminal record.
« on: Sunday 23 November 14 13:36 GMT (UK)  »
I've found a criminal record for someone who may be my ancestor, but I can't understand what the offence was:

He was given 7 days Hard Labour for what looks like 'Lodging Out' between Dec 1906 and Mar 1907.  On the same page there are a lot of other 'Lodging Out' convictions.

Does anybody know what this might mean?

Thank you!

Durham / Re: Havelock House, Sunderland.
« on: Tuesday 08 January 13 09:42 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for the info and link, Stan. Most helpful.  I think Havelock House was a Draper's before the fire too.

Late on Jul. 18, 1898, a Saturday, fire broke out at 'Havelock House', the name by which George H. (Henry) Havelock's (that's George Havelock at left below) drapery store in Sunderland, was known. A noted store indeed, located at the major business intersection known as MacKie's Corners - where Fawcett & Bridge Streets cross High Street....fromhttp://www.searlecanada.org/sunderland/sunderland018.html#1898fire

My grandparents married in 1913 a year later than the postcard date, and she moved from Sunderland to Devon.  It seems that she changed address a few times in Sunderland and South Shields before her marriage, so my grandfather, as you say, quite possibly didn't know her current address.

Thanks again for your help.

Durham / Havelock House, Sunderland.
« on: Monday 07 January 13 18:11 GMT (UK)  »

Hello :)

I have a postcard from my grandfather to my grandmother dated 1912 before they married.  The address is simply her name, Havelock House, Sunderland.

A little googling has led me to believe Havelock House was a Drapery Store on MacKies Corner (Fawcett St and High Street West?), which burnt down in 1898 and was rebuilt as a huge department store.  My grandmother did indeed work as a Draper's Assistant and lived in Sunderland in 1911, according to the census.

My querie is, even if she did indeed work there, why would my grandfather have written it as her address?  Is is possible there were living quarters on the top floors?

All suggestions welcome ;D
