Completed Census Requests / GovDeathRecordsUK.com
« on: Saturday 31 January 09 00:15 GMT (UK)  »
This site seems to offer a lot for not much money - just a one off payment of about £28. It has a lot more than just death records. Before signing up I would like to ask if anyone has used the site and could give me some feedback. that would be really helpful, thanks a lot.
Also where can I get free access to the 1911 census - is that possible??

The Lighter Side / Which Website?
« on: Thursday 10 April 08 23:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi I think there is a website that you can enter a UK address and it gives the info of who was living in that house at the time of the 1901 census.
Can someone tell me the best site for how I get this info.  Will I have to sign up & pay for it?
Any help appreciated.

The Lighter Side / Re: Strange Traditions - Wedding Cake
« on: Thursday 18 October 07 20:51 BST (UK)  »
Yes I remember we kept the top tier of the wedding cake for the christening and it was fine.  Most people did it.  Also I was interested in the post about the sixpences in the cake - we didn't do this but it reminded me how we used to put old silver three penny pieces in the Christmas pudding - the same ones year after year! They were washed and wrapped in tinfoil and kept to use again. How many people remember those silver threepenny bits? ( I might still have them somewhere - perhaps they are valuable now??)
Interesting thread - thank you.

World War One / Re: Grandfathers photograph
« on: Thursday 18 October 07 20:41 BST (UK)  »
Thanks Ady - it was good to hear from you so quickly.  Yes, I need to go to the
National Archives and do some looking up.  Must make the trip to Kew. Thanks for the tip about looking up old newspapers - hadn't thought of that.
My grandfather was Joseph Harrison and he was with the Royal Engineers in France.  Have not found him yet on the medal card link but will try again if I can add more information to the search.
thanks

World War One / Grandfathers photograph
« on: Thursday 18 October 07 14:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi my grandfather was in WWI and he died many years before I was born.  I have never even seen a photo of him and would dearly love to see one.  As he was in the Army I assume they would have a photo in his records?  Would they let me see it & how on earth do I apply for this?
Maybe an unusual request but it would mean so much to me, advice welcome please.
I am not experienced yet in this but am enjoying my family history research.
