Norfolk / Norwich Coroner Reports
« on: Sunday 13 March 05 10:53 GMT (UK)  »
I have an ancestor who died in September 1888 of a coma following concussion of the brain caused by falling downstairs.  As her death was notified by the coroner at the time I wonderered if anyone knew whether there would be coroner reports available for that time, or whether I will only have local newspapers as sources for finding more information on her death.  I'm not sure the death would even be newsworthy because she was an old lady when she died.  Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Sharon

Completed Census Requests / Re: Ancestral File on LDS - how reliable?
« on: Friday 18 February 05 19:28 GMT (UK)  »
I'd certainly agree that the source documents must be checked.  I recently found a whole family on the LDS and was pleased to see the mother's maiden name mentioned.  I commissioned the local records office to search for the marriage - and there was no record of the two parties being married.  Just shows - you need to check the sources.

Norfolk Lookup Requests / 1841 - SIMPSON in Norwich
« on: Wednesday 16 February 05 18:49 GMT (UK)  »
Would some kind soul try to find the following family for me in the 1841 census.

The last known address I have is from the 1851 census (Magdalen St, Norwich) St Pauls. PRO Ref HO/107/1813 Folio 4 Page 1 FHL Film 0207466.

Notes: The surname is mis-transcribed as Timpson in 1851 and I've also found William's birth & christening record mis-transcribed as Stimpson.

In 1841 it should look something like this:
William SIMPSON, head age 57, born Hockering Norfolk
Wife unknown but possibly Sarah (believe she would be alive on this census)
William SIMPSON, Son aged 19
Johnathan Layton SIMPSON, Son aged 15
Peter Hagg Henry (or just Henry) SIMPSON, son aged 13
Sarah SIMPSON, daughter aged 12

Many thanks,
Sharon

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Re: 1841 Census request TENTERDEN
« on: Sunday 16 January 05 12:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Carol,

Here are all the others I found. And apologies - the other references I posted were all under HO107/476 too (I forgot to add that before).  Sorry, I've had no luck with John BREEDS but the majority of the images have black smudges over the bottom 3-6 entries on each page making them impossible to read. He may be there if the originals were viewed.

These live in the same dwelling but it goes over two folios:
HO107/476 ED12 Folio 4 Page4
Brook Street, Woodchurch, Tenterden
GEORGE James*, m, 65, Independent means, Kent
HO107/476 ED 12 Folio 5 Page 5
Brook Street, Woodchurch, Tenterden
GEORGE Richd, m, 20, Ag Lab, Kent
LAW Henry, m, 65, Ag Lab, Kent
THINNY Jonathan, m, 20, Bricklayer’s Labourer, Kent

* The image has black smudges across the name and ‘James’ is a best guess as to what is written.

This one is exactly as written – I’ll let you work out if all the children are COBB-LAW or not.
HO101/476 ED13 Folio28 Page 19

Hi foxglove,

Are these the people you are looking for?

Birdside, Tenterden. ED 5 Folio 16 Page 25
Munns Cottages
BREEDS Ann, f, 35, Kent
BREEDS Mary, f, 10, Kent
BREEDS James, m, 4, Kent
BREEDS William, m, 1, Kent

Birdside, Tenterden. ED 5 Folio 21 Page 34
Near The Marshall Farm
LAW James, m, 72, Kent
LAW Mary, f, 68, Kent
LAW James, m, 40, Kent

And in the next dwelling
Birdside, Tenterden. ED 5 Folio 21 Page 34
LAW George, m, 34,,Kent
LAW Sarah, f, 26, Kent
LAW Caroline, f, 5 months, Kent

I hope it is Birdside - the writing is a little poor and that's the best I could make it out to be.  Unfortunately, the 1841 census doesn't give house numbers.

The Common Room / Re: Squiggly Writing
« on: Friday 14 January 05 21:47 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for the James Bailey reference & for all the above - it'll surely keep me busy for hours!

Little Nell - As for the confusion....I think I now need to establish if there were 2 Mercy Honis Bailey's that married in the same month in the same year.  If there were, then the parents could belong to either one of them.

If there was only one Mercy Honis Bailey married that year, then yes, I do have the parent's names.  I just think there is a question that has to be answered before I can be relatively certain (forgive the pun). :-\  I'm off to check 1837online now.

Let's call a halt to this discussion.  Thanks to everyone.

It's funny you should say that 'Honis' could be a surname. My initial assumption when I first found her on the census with my ggg grandfather was that her mother's maiden name was Honis.  Of course, that was the usual assumption making an ass out of me!

I don't suppose that I'd be able to find anything at all on the father now, although I could search A2A to see if there was any claim for support (or the equivalent in those days).

Does anyone have any tips on where to go from here?
