Offaly (Kings) / McEvoys - Rhode / Edenderry 1800s
« on: Monday 10 April 17 13:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I've finally managed to trace my quite elusive 2x great grandparents to Offaly and would be delighted to talk to anyone else who might have information on them.

They are William McEvoy b. Mar 1822 to John McEvoy & Margaret Hogan (m. Feb 1822 in Edenderry)

He was baptised in Edenderry, as were siblings Mary (1823), Michael (1824), Elizabeth (1826), Ann (1827), James (1829), Bidy (1830) and James again (I guess the earlier one died) in 1832.

William married Betty Seery in Rhode in 1852, they moved to Dublin and had four children (that I know of) there. John (1853), Mary (1855), James (1858) and Elizabeth (1863) - there may have been more, I just havent found any yet!!!

Hope this might ring a few bells for someone,
Denise

Okay, the way I see is that I have no notion what the story is with Joseph for now but I'm going to plough on anyway seeing as it definitely does seem to be my George in both marriages - and who knows, maybe it will throw up something re Joseph too

Oh, now that throws the cat amongst the pigeons, doesn't it. I doubt very much if if Reuben West is related to Ellen as she was  born in Dublin and married George when he was stationed there.

Dont know what to think about this, need to mull it over for a bit

Again, thank you so much Capetown. I now definitely think my George is also the George who married Charlotte West nee Winkworth from comparing signatures on two daughters marriage banns, one from each marriage. In my eye they are identical. I'll try attach them here now and you can see what I mean.

Wow, thank you very much everyone. I really appreciate it.

The discharge papers I have mentioned in earlier posts are indeed the ones posted above by Capetown (and thank you especially Capetown for all your work on this), and I think there are far too many similarities not to be my man, particularly approx year of birth, Gloucester, Gunner and Driver in RA, over 8 years in Gibraltar (my George had 4 children born there in 1837, 39, 40 and 43).  And it may be stretching it a bit but his occupation prior to enlisting was a weaver - in his daughters marriage banns in 1860 he is a Cordswainer, not the same but not a million miles apart either.

re a possible marriage to Charlotte West nee Winkworth. What makes this more likely as a hit for me is in 1861 census there is a 12 year old Joseph. My George would have had a 12/13 yo Joseph from his marriage to Ellen.....

As for the rest, I apologize but I need to absorb this bit first and try to pick holes in it before my brain can go further -  my heart is definitely saying that yes, both of these are my George but I need to let my head take a look at it now too!!!

I'll check back in a day or two and let you if I've been able to tick this off as a yes :)
Thanks again
Denise

They were in Gibraltar in 1841 so I dont have that one either :(

I think my best best now is to check the army discharge route to see if I can yay or nay that line of enquiry.

It is the one and only census I have for him!! Practically the entire family have disappeared on me from then on. He was in the Royal Artillery and I think I have him to 1858 by a set of discharge papers but I cant say yet if it is him or not - need more checking out.

I definitely have no sign of his wife after 1851 when their daughter Ellen was born and think that maybe she died in childbirth, but again, not finding her death records either though!

Fun n games :)
