Thanks very much to all of you who replied to my request and especially to Cazay for answering my request for the the electoral roll information - I will be looking at the WA Post Office Directory which you mentioned too. I think that the death entry in 1961 found by jorose is almost certainly Howard's and matches his expected age so I will be sending for the certificate.
Jenn, thanks very much for pointing out the black sheep entry - it was one I posted back in 2003 and had forgotten about! Howard was the son of a Baptist minister and the black sheep of the family. After he was sent to Australia the only person who kept in contact with him was his oldest sister Edith. I found the details of Howard's passage to Australia some years ago but until now could not find any trace of him after his arrival at Albany so I am delighted to be able to move forward with my search.
