Two more things just occurred to me.
The backdrop seems to depict a breakwater, did either of them live on the coast ?
Is there any info on the back, studio name and place as much information can be gleaned from it.

2
Now you say it Sue so do I.
Maybe it is a work uniform and the shoes mentioned by buttons are industrial work shoes?

3
There are others on here who are excellent at dating but the things that I noticed are -
Although he has white hair his face isn’t lined so I’d put him in his 50s.

It’s a very relaxed/casual photo, he’s not wearing a tie, hand in pocket, suit a bit rumpled as if just come from work ?

There’s a pin on his lapel, although it’s a bit blurry it doesn’t look like there is writing on it ??
Maybe it’s a colour denoting a ‘shift’ could he have been a bus/train driver?

Possibly his collar is two tone as in a uniform?

What were your grandfathers occupations ?

The Common Room / Re: Documenting a House History
« on: Thursday 30 May 24 10:23 BST (UK)  »
I have also researched my Victorian house. I have the title deeds so had the owners names but the house was rented out several times so there were two sets of people at one time to look into.

A post on Rootschat led the granddaughter of a previous owner to knock my door which then led to photographs of that family in the house.

The most interesting things I found was the social history which came from searching The British Newspaper Archive with the houses two addresses, the street was renamed in the 1940s.

I found a marriage taking place, the niece of the owner, several deaths and numerous adverts for domestic staff and even a small ad for a lost black Labrador.
The house next door was the base for the Air Raid Warden during the war.

The small ads in old newspapers are fascinating, they were the local WhatsApp groups of the day.

As I have decorated over the years I have kept small scraps of the old wallpapers I’ve uncovered.

Sadly after much searching it appears there are no building plans remaining for our house but I did find plans logged for alterations and upgrading of the drains. This was really beneficial as to understanding the room layout particularly what would have been the domestic area and servants quarters. This area in the basement is the part which had been the most altered over the 140 years so
the water and drainage plan explained a lot.

The things you get excited about when you get old  ::) :D

Happy searching

That’s so funny!
Well done on your persistence.
Isn’t it just the thing that these things come to you in the middle of the night, they often do for me, I’ll be ‘chewing the cud’ over a puzzle for days then out of the blue the solution pings into my head when I’ve stopped thinking about it  ;D

Scotland / Re: Scottish marriages conundrum!

It was his sister who registered his death.

The 1911 census has her living with DJ Schulman 29 in Aberdeen, he is a reporter for a newspaper and she is a palmist aged 33.
They have two children living with them.
Eva Barrett Schulman 5 who is described as his adopted daughter and Fred O’Brien 5 who is a nephew.
Annoyingly they haven’t filled in the children still alive/no longer alive column.

Interesting she states her place of birth as Lucknow India

Morning
His death certificate says he died age 55 in Glasgow from a hemorrhage from a cut throat.
It stares he was married to Annie O’Brien.

The corrected entry states that his death was suicide.

Interestingly they had a son also called John Hendrey O’Pray in 1901 who died aged 11 months from measles.

Hi James
Foxjohnstone hasn’t been active on Rootschat since February 2018.
Maybe it would be better if you sent him a PM as may go directly to his email.
Hope he’s still around
All the best
