Inverness / Re: Jean Tipping Glenfinnan Inverness
« on: Saturday 20 January 24 23:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Monica
Thank you for the information you have posted. The information about Jean Tipping and Glen House I got from Olive Mary Tipping's birth certificate along with the address of the Workhouse in Liverpool.

The information about Thomas Tipping was on Scotlands People and unfortunately my subscription has expired. I just noted the same address and nothing else when I found it before Christmas.

I believe Jean's name was Mary Jane Tipping and she MAY have been born in Glasgow or in Ireland. Either that, or she was born in Glasgow of parents who came from Ireland.

Jean further had another two children (Margaret Rose Bennett and Thomas Bennett) in Romiley in Cheshire. Margaret's birth certificate certainly seems to indicate her parents were both together at the time of her birth but I can find no marriage record for a Thomas Bennett and anyone with the name Tipping. Thomas Bennett was born in 1932 in Romiley; Margaret in 1937.

Olive Mary Tipping was apparently reared in an orphanage in Inverness. She eventually made her way down to London where she worked as a cinema usherette. She married Rene Morris, a Canadian serviceman and went with him to Montreal. She then had multiple partners, and lived in several places in USA. She died in Florida in 2011.

Olive's grand-daughter and I share considerable DNA and neither of us know how. We are trying to solve the puzzle.

Cheers

Inverness / Jean Tipping Glenfinnan Inverness
« on: Tuesday 05 December 23 22:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hello the list

I am chasing information on Jean or Mary Jane Tipping who was born about 1902. My only clue is that she recorded herself in 1924 as a general servant of Glen House, Glenfinnan in Inverness. I have not been able to find a suitable record in Scotland's People, Ancestry, Findmypast or FamilySearch. However I did find a WWI medal card for a Thomas Tipping whose address was also at Glen House.

I notice there are quite a few Tipping records in Glasgow but all the information I can find about Glen House points me to the hotel (which may be correct) or to Bonnie Prince Charlie or the viaduct which is not a help.

Jean Tipping had an illegitimate child in the workhouse in West Derby, Lancashire, England in 1924. The story is that this child was put into the orphanage in Inverness. Somehow it appears this lady is related to me but I have no idea how.

I would appreciate any help.

Cheers

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Re: Garlicks Upperthong

Hello
It appears the father of your Garlick boys was Benjamin Garlick who was probably the son of Charles Garlick of Holmfirth, baptised on 23 Sep 1788. Benjamin appears to have married Nancy Beardsell on 26 May 1810 in Almondbury, Yorkshire. Nancy was buried at Holmfirth on 9 May 1814 aged 27 years. Since John was born on 17 Apr 1814, it is likely this was the result of childbirth. James was born on 12 March 1812. Christopher was therefore most probably the result of a second marriage if Benjamin was his father, however no birth record for a Christopher born about 1821-1826 with a father Benjamin was found. He could have been a cousin.

Christopher can be found living with John in the next household to James the 1841 census and in the 1851-1881 census records, married to Sarah. James married Mary Ann Marsden in 1835 in Mottram, Cheshire. John may have died in Mottram in 1848 since the John cited in 1851 does not appear to be the same man.

Benjamin appears to have had brothers: Joseph born 1786; and Joshua born 1790, but there is no mother identified. However there is a marriage record for a Charles Garlick and Mary Brook on 19 Sep 1785 at Kirkburton, Yorkshire which may fit.

That's my lot. Good luck with your Garlicks. Mine are all a worry too!

Thanks Heatherjulie.  I don't suppose you have any further information on Ridgways from Hollingworth or Mottram. If you do I would really appreciate a conversation.

Cheshire / Ridgway family from Hollingworth and Mottram 1300s to 1900s
« on: Tuesday 21 September 21 09:58 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for people associated with the family of Ignatius Ridgway and Hannah How who married in 1767 in Mottram in Longdendale.

Ignatius was the son of James Ridgway and Mary Leech and was brother to James Ridgway the radical publisher of Piccadilly.

James Ridgway appears to have been born in 1724 since his will shows he died in 1814 and he was 90 years old. The family seems to have been securely bound to Hollingworth/Stalybride/Dukinfield for many hundreds of years.

James' parents appear to have been John Ridgway and Elizabeth Kelsall, so John must have been born before 1703 but it does not look as though the digial records go back that far.

If anyone can do a look up for John Ridgway of Hollingworth or Mottram for 1680-1703 that would be great.

Thanks.

Wow

See, I knew the collective wisdom would turn up something! Silly me, it never occurred to me to look for another marriage for Nancy. Thank you very much.

Mary Ardern was supposedly born in Wilmslow in 1806/7/8 (according to the census 1851-71). I cannot find a suitable baptism record for her. The family was rampantly Methodist.

William Jones was supposedly born in Wilmslow in 1805/6 according to 1851/61 census and death certificate. The family which fits closest to him is that of Thomas Jones (b in Wales) and Esther Barlow and the baptism record for him is for 1 Feb 1807 in Wilmslow.

William and Mary's first child was Ruth who was born 7 Sep 1831 according to Wilmslow Methodist records. She died early and does not appear in 1841. The next child was Enos, born 5 Dec 1834 and baptised in Wilmslow Methodist. Helena is the youngest child in this family. Her birth certificate gives her name as Elenor but she is recorded everywhere else as Helena.

Helena married James Garlick in Bedbury on 21 Sep 1861. James was the son of Samuel Garlick and Mary Ann Swindells. James was born in Hadfield, Derbyshire and his father was a Methodist "hedge school" teacher, lay preacher and insurance salesman. This is my main line.

On the 1848 marriage record in Manchester Cathedral, William Jones claims his father's name was Thomas and he was an engineer. This agrees with the 1841 census record for Thomas Jones and Esther Barlow. Mary claims her father was Robert Ardern and that he was a cotton carder. The only Robert Ardern I can find seems to have been the son of John Ardern (a tailor) and Mary Foden. Robert appears to have married Ann/Nancy Shewsbury in 1797. They had Abraham, Sampson and William. If this is the correct family for Mary, her father died about the time of her birth which may?? explain why I can't find a baptism for her in the Cheshire Parish records.

Since Ruth was born late in 1831, the April marriage for 1831 is feasible. William and Mary would have been about 25yrs old. Of course, one of them could have been married previously but I have not found any record which might support that. Neither have I found any record which might indicate William had been in the military. My conclusion was that maybe he had taken an insurance policy with Samuel Garlick's Methodist Insurance people and needed a certificate to prove Mary was his wife, but of course I could be wrong.

Samuel Ardern is a worry. The only one who fits the criteria was married and in another place in 1861 to Mary's supposed brother. The son of Robert Ardern, Sampson, is similarly otherwise placed. Neither can I find Samuel either in the 1851 or 1871 census records, in parish records or BMD records. Following thru the families of Robert Ardern's sons doesn't help either.

Mary Garlick, the daughter of James and Helena, married David Moses Lewis of Bodfari in 1888 in Manchester. David was a grocer. Following him backwards I can link him into the family of Robert Jones of Llansannon in Flintshire. Robert Jones' daughter Sarah married David Lewis, f/o David Moses, as his first wife. This Robert Jones had a brother Thomas. Whether this is William Jones' direct family is not conclusive, but it would not surprise me at all.

That is my sad little tale. I am currently writing up a history of this family and this marriage record for 1831 is a gap in the proceedings. I did not see it or discover it. A descendant of Enos Jones did but despite considerable urging, he cannot remember where he got it from. I just thought I would have a go at tapping into the collective wisdom of Rootschat who have been so helpful in the past. However, this quest seems to present a particularly stubborn brick wall.

Thank you for your efforts on my behalf.

Thanks. I will check the 1831 Manchester marriage.

Yes, I do have Helena Jones' birth certificate showing her parents to be William Jones and Mary Ardern. I also have Helena's daughter, Mary Garlick, with Samuel Ardern, her uncle, in the 1861 census.

The family are in Lacey Green, Pownall Fee (nr Wilmslow) Cheshire in 1841 and in Newbridge Lane Stockport (Portwood) in 1851 where they stayed in 1861 until William Jones died.

William Jones was the son of Thomas Jones and Esther Barlow and Mary Ardern is believed to have been the daughter of Robert Ardern who died in 1806.

William and Mary Jones had six children: Ruth, Enos, John, Harriet, Ann, Helena. Ruth died as an infant. There are parish records for Ruth, Enos and John's baptisms in the Wilmslow Wesleyan Methodist church but the three girls were all born after 1837 and the parish records do not extend that far. According to the first two baptisms for 1831 and 1834 the family were living in Morley near Wilmslow.

No prior marriage record that could be attributed to William or Mary had been found. Mary was an annuitant after William's death and I looked to see if he had a military record prior to marriage but he was born in 1807 and Ruth was born in 1831, so he was 24 when she was born. If he was not supposed to enlist until 18 this would have given him only 5 years service from 1825 to 1830. I could not find a conclusive military record for him.

Cheers
