United States of America / Re: TIGNOR family in Virginia
« on: Sunday 22 November 20 13:37 GMT (UK)  »
Dear all,

My effort to reply to ohio person seemed to get knocked out by the entry of the post from someone trying to contact Sandra. I will try again below.

My aim is to establish perimeters for the birth and marriage of William Tigner (d.1656/57) (so far first located in Virginia records in 1650 by on south side of Rappahannock River, but apparently already having been there for sometime) in order to search for appropriate origins for him, probably in South-East England.

1. If I understand it correctly there are not records of birth/baptism or marriage of people in Virginia before 1652, but there are death, land and probate records from that date; is that correct? If so is there a definitive death record for William Tignor in 1656/57, probably in Lancaster county, which might give his age at death, or a gravestone that might give his age at death?

2. Are there records of the 90 single women brought in to Virginia in 1619 to help populate the settlement. Were there any Mabels amongst them?

3. Did people come from other American colonies to Virginia between 1607 and 1650?

4. I understand that Coldham has done a lot of work on indentured settlers into Virginia over the 1607 to 1660 period, but have not had any chance to consult these during lock-down, but wonder if William Tignor (d1656/57) was amongst them before 1650.

5. Where can one access boat records of people coming to Virginia over the 1607 to 1650 period, particularly before 1640?

John TICKNOR settled in Scituate in Massachusetts in 1646, reputedly coming from Tenterden in Kent, England, having been baptised there in 1633.

Most of these TICKNOR/TICHENOUR/TIGNOR name variants were living in Surrey, Sussex, Kent, Berkshire and London in South-East England at this point in time.

regards,

Vincent

Thank you, the 2 of you who have responded. I have seen a fair bit of this information on William Tignor (d. 1656/57). My main aim is to establish when he first came to Virginia before 1650. He seems to have married Mabel, and had his son, William, by about 1640. I then want to try to establish from whence he came. It could have been from another American colony, but I suspect it was more probably from South-East England or London, where the surname was more probably written as TICKNOR/ TYCKENOR or other variants.

I am looking for people who have researched the TIGNOR family in Virginia, U.S.A., particularly ones who have looked into William TIGNOR (d.1656/57 Lancaster County, Virginia).

My daughter's branch is through Anne Manning (1683-1754), daughter of William Manning and Ann Eyle, who married in 1711 Richard Whitworth (1677-1761) of Earls Barton, so I think we could start with a fuller dialogue on the Mannings. Try gamco@netcomuk.co.uk. Vincent

Northamptonshire / Re: The Family of John EYLLE (d.c. 1691), Yeoman of Hardingstone
« on: Thursday 09 April 20 20:03 BST (UK)  »
Dear Mary Ann,

John and Ann were the parents of Ann Eylle (c1644-1718), who married William Manning (pre-1656/ probably pre-1625-1719), Yeoman of Hardingstone, who were ancestors of my daughter's on her maternal side. What is your descent from them?

I am still not sure of John's origins, but a John EYLE, son of Thomas EYLE, was baptised in Hardingstone on  June 25, 1615.  A Thomas AILE married Katherine IVES in Hardingstone on July 31, 1603, but then a Thomas EILE married Alice PETIFERE in Hardingstone on April 21, 1607.

Ann CLARKE was baptised in Hardingstone on September 17, 1615, daughter of Bartholomew CLARKE (c1592-1677). Bartholomew CLARKE married Agnes WEST in Hardingstone on November 15, 1614. The marriage licences give that Bartholomew CLARKE of Hardingstone had a licence on November 15, 1614 to marry Agnes WEST in Hardingstone. Bartholomew CLARKE was baptised in Hardingstone on October 4, 1592, son of John CLARKE. Does this correspond with the information you have?

The Bettesworth (and variants) were often found in Trotton, Midhurst, Woolbeding, Chithurst, Iping, Elstead, Linchmere, Treyford, Kirdford, Fyning, Rogate, Turwyke, Harting, Easeborne, and Wollavington in West Sussex, so it might help you to look in those directions.

Surrey / Stanbridge, Neckland/Nickland, Birt/Burt and Heath Families in Worplesdon/Albury
« on: Thursday 27 September 18 16:22 BST (UK)  »
John STANBRIDGE (d.1758), Papermaker of Burpham (Worplesdon parish), appears to have been a son of Robert STANBRIDGE of Albury, Surrey, John being baptised in 1695 in Albury. John had a wife called Elizabeth, and it is suspected that he was the John STANBRIDGE who married an Elizabeth NECKLAND on September 27, 1741 in Worplesdon. In his Will of 1758 John left part of his estate to his “late wife's niece Mary HEATH, wife of George HEATH, to divide between the family and her”, she also being his sole executrix. Mary HEATH was either the Mary BURT (or BIRT) (d.1793) (dau. of Rachel BURT (nee ?????) - d.1794) of Worplesdon, who married George HEATH (c1727-1793) of Stoke (Blacksmith), by banns, in Worplesdon on May 8, 1755, or else she was the Mary FRANKS who had married George HEATH (Husbandman)(d.1772) in Worplesdon on October, 1, 1727. the latter Mary was probably the Mary HEATH buried in woollen in Worplesdon on 16-10-1764. I am trying to establish the links between Elizabeth, who married John STANBRIDGE, and her niece, Mary HEATH (nee ?????).

Wiltshire / Reverend John Parker (c1753-1828 or c1750-1825) of Kemble
« on: Tuesday 03 April 18 21:40 BST (UK)  »
The Reverend John Parker was apparently vicar of All Saints, Kemble for 40 years. He was buried in Kemble on June 5, 1828, aged 75 (i.e. born circa 1753), although his gravestone says that he died on June 1, 1825, aged 75 (i.e. born circa 1750). He had a wife, Mary, and his first child seems to have been born around 1789. I am trying to find out more about him and his family, particularly his son, William (probably born in the 1790s), and whether the Rev. John left a Will. John Ross Parker, his eldest son,  was buried in Kemble on September 13, 1812, having died on September 11, 1812, aged 23 (i.e. born circa 1789). Can anyone help on this? Vincent

Hi Caroline!

I see that the email address has been removed. I look forward to getting your response. Ironically, I am working on this primarily to help someone in Australia who is descended from this family, and their relative in New Zealand. Long live international collaboration! Vincent
