Glamorganshire / Question about 1890s weddings
« on: Tuesday 18 June 13 19:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I was wondering about something... Wedding photos. Would ordinary people have wedding photos in the 1890s, especially in the 1896 era? I am asking because I had great-great grandparents who married that year in the Briton Ferry/Neath area. Did everyone have wedding photos in the 1890s or  was it only for those who could afford it? Looking forward to replies.

Well we know who Jane's Parent's are, as she is with Thomas and Susannah in the census until she get's married just that I hoped for a birth certificate as I would not mind a precise date etc. I will check at Bridgend in case she was registered there. With thanks to all who helped.

1881 census has a likelt looking Thomas aged 54 and wife Susan aged 57. Havent aged between census so likely one set of ages are wrong.

Yes, the 1871 census is wrong - Thomas and Susannah have their birth years wrong. Though unsure if Jane's is wrong (need to find it) but we know John Phillips (1851) is still correct.

I would ask for another check for the 1857 birth

I will have to consider this.

Would there be alternative sources for births? Could it be that the baptism records could had been destroyed/damaged?

Have you seen the Jane Phillips birth registered in Neath in Sep quarter 1855 (vol 11a, page 413).

We have asked, been told it's not her.
The 1871 says she was born in 1857 - and there's a birth registered in Neath in Jan quarter 1857 (11a, P419). How about this one?

We asked at the registry office for them to search 1855 and 1857. They also search the years before and after and they say nothing comes up. The weird thing is Thomas and Susannah registered the older siblings and the younger ones but not her.

Her siblings were; John Phillips, Thomas, David, William and Ann.

Strange 1871 entry - parents Thomas & Susan are shown as 58 & 57 respectively but they have a 3yr old daughter??

Thomas married Susannah Williams in Neath in 1850 as per freebmd

This is an interesting one isn't it. Their eldest son is a John Phillips (b.1851) and we had found a record of him. I can't make this one out.

I have done quite a bit of research on my Phillips relatives and the census links them up well but I would like to have concrete paper evidence of a birth in particular. The birth I am looking at is for a Jane Phillips. Jane would be my great-great-great grandmother.  The census records record her as being born in or around 1855. We have searched as much as we can for baptisms and birth certificates but nothing seems to come up yet her elder and younger siblings do have birth certificates and baptism records.

Jane became Fishlock upon marriage. Her parents were Thomas and Susan/Susannah Phillips, both of Giant's Grave, Briton Ferry. How can I solve this situation?
