Question about 1890s weddings
« on: Tuesday 18 June 13 19:39 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I was wondering about something... Wedding photos. Would ordinary people have wedding photos in the 1890s, especially in the 1896 era? I am asking because I had great-great grandparents who married that year in the Briton Ferry/Neath area. Did everyone have wedding photos in the 1890s or  was it only for those who could afford it? Looking forward to replies.

Hi Tom,

I guess that the answer is that some folks would have had them, but not everyone. It also depends on who inherited them, and what they did with them, - not everyone hangs on to old family photos!

I have a wet colloidon print, (on glass) of my Great Grandparents, Evan and Margaret Rees, taken on their wedding day in Swansea in the early 1860's. The only reason that I have it is because an old Uncle gave it to me in the 1960's because he thought I might like the decorative wooden case that it came in. He had drawer- fulls of family photos, but when he died, I was a student, and my elder sister, who was named as his next of kin, - threw them all away:-(

Not everyone shares an interest in family history... My mother threw away all photos of my father when he died. Luckily, by tracing first cousins on that side of the family, - I now have two photos of my father, who died when I was five.

I hope that someone in your extended family will pass on copies of the photos that you are looking for!

Best Wishes, Romilly.
