Hertfordshire / Re: Burial places in/around Ware 1700's

Leaside Church in Ware.  The methodist church and united reform church were amalgamated in 1970 something I think and have no idea where the methodist church and united reform church might have been prior to that.  Now situated off the High Street, alleyway between two shops, but I doubt there would be a burial ground there but might be worth researching the Methodist and united reform churches prior to 1970.  But I would have thought that Dead Lane Burial Ground would seem more appropriate but I have always felt there wouldn't have been too many burials there as what remains (a grassed over seating area) is very small.  Guess it might have extended beyond that and is now the car park.  Oh dear.

There is also Christ Church in Ware (New Road) but I think the dates you are looking at would eliminate that one.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Berlin Wool Business, Holdenhurst/Christchurch

I have an ancestor who was living at Seymour Lodge, Richmond Hill, Holdenhurst on the 1891 census.  She describes her occupation as assistant in berlin wool business.  There would appear to be a housekeeper at this address and about eight girls working in the berlin wool business.  Been trying to find some background info on this berlin wool business but have drawn a blank.  Can anyone out there with local history knowledge fill in any details.

Anything, however small, greatfully received.

Thanks

Hi there

Haven't heard of the Gypsy Dave or Gypsy Jo but my mum might have heard of him.  If I remember I will ask her.  But as a bit of background info you might like to know that many Italians settled in this area during the 1950s and their main occupation was nursery gardening.

Hi there

Re the militia lists - it is my understanding that if the person was married with quite a few children then they were unlikely to be balloted as if called to serve the parish would have the responsibility of financing the care of the children which would become uneconomical.

In my experience although the militia lists are another research tool, in reality they hold very little information.

Hi Carol

I was not saying that these Ayletts/Aylotts had any connections to the Albury lot .... just purely pointing out that there were also Aylotts in Albury in case a wider search of the area might be required.

Hi there

I have been attempting to make some sense of the Hertfordshire Regiment as my grandfather was in the Herts Yeomanry.  It all seems a bit confusing to me and I think you need to have some military knowledge to fully understand it.

I do however have some information on the 1st/1st Hertfordshire Yeomanry with names of those killed in action.

From what I can glean they were in the Dardanelles 1915, Egypt and Palestine 1914-1919, Mesopotamia 1916-1918 and France 1916-1917.  I also have the War Diary for the 1/1 Herts Yeomanry in the Dardanelles from Aug 1915 to 30 Nov 1915.

I was actually trying to establish if my grandfather took part in Galipoli as his war record must be amongst the burnt offerings but I got lost with divisions and squadrons in all the paperwork I collected. ???

Have you tried HALS at Hertford.  If born in Thundridge, you may find a report of the trial in the Herts Mercury or the archives section may even have the full trial report.  Think some records show name as Aylett and others Aylott.  There were Aylotts at Albury, Herts.  James Aylott and his wife Ann and two children Sarah and John were bounty immigrants on the Robert Small, May 1856.  Think there may have been a Thomas Aylott and family too but cant find my reference at present.

I am not sure whether any actually returned to the UK.  Even when they got their ticket of leave they had to get permission to marry.  We do have one that was sentenced to transportation but it seems feasible that he may have received a reprieve as he is in later UK census returns.  But perhaps as he was already married he saved his fare to return to his family.

Hope this helps
