Australia / Re: Robert King and Sarah Strickland Tasmania

I tried to upload the same Trove info as you have put up Judith, including the shoe connection !  Something happened to my post, possibly left it too long unposted.
Anyway, I too was going to point out that Mary was reading the Spanish history so I suspect some connection was there.  The photograph of Mary and family in the book "Sassafras : A history of Settlement and its People" shows her clearly having darker skin tone.
I keep coming back to this question again and again so I hope one day an answer will come.

Looking back over the family more closely (been a while) since you have been so helpful Judith,  I see that Rebecca b 16 May 1852 died on board the 'Northumberland' en route to Australia (Tasmania) 27 December 1852.  Mary Rebecca was born  1854 in Longford, Tasmania so it doesn't really bode well for adoption, but not impossible of course. I also rememer that I have a newspaper interview with Mary Rebecca when she was in her eighties in Ulverstone, Tasmania commenting she was well versed in the Spanish language !  She also mentioned their settlement at Sassafras in a thickly forested area, and a visit by bushrangers.
Well, the plot thickens I guess !  :-)
Three sons followed for Robert and Sarah King from 1856 to 1860.

Thankyou Judith for your research and cupoflife for clarifying my request.
It is clear they are of English stock so the only option is adoption. I have in mind too that many Spanish settled in Ireland at the time of the Armada and wonder if there is a connection here to explore? A mystery !
Many descendants of Mary Rebecca Shadbolt(nee King) even today show random darker skin and/or eyes that affirm my idea that there is Mediterranean ancestry there somewhere.

Australia / Robert King and Sarah Strickland Tasmania

Robert and Sarah came to Australia aboard "Northumberland" c 1852.  I have a family member descended from their daughter Mary Rebecca King b 30 April 1854 in Longford, Tasmania.  Mary Rebecca has distinct Mediterranean features and a very Anglicised name which is mystifying.  How could I find out what her origins are ?  So far all I have is that Robert and Sarah came from Lincolnshire.   Robert's fa was Thomas king, Mo Alice Thulby or Thurlby, Sarah's pa John Strickland and Rebecca King.
