Jonn,

Sounds like them!  How exciting!

I have to go out of town today, so I will look more into it when I get home.

Thank you so much for your time, it's much appreciated!

Ayrshire / Lookup - James McDonald New/Old Cumnock 1831
« on: Wednesday 09 July 14 23:48 BST (UK)  »
Hello!
I finally received my information from Colorado (US), where my ancestor immigrated.  Anyway, the obit. in the newspaper clipping said he was born in Old Cumnock.  I have tried everything I have been able to find online about figuring out who his parents were, but I can't seem to find much.  I was wondering if there was anyone out there who is willing to help me out, or point me in the right direction?  I should point out that the obit. states that he apprenticed as a tailor in Scotland, and continued as a tailor until his death.  Any help is greatly appreciated!

James was born (according to the US census) in Dec 1831.  The census states that he immigrated in 1851, but his obit. says 1857.

I know Scots usually have a special order they name their children, so I will list the names of James' children in the order they were born, in case it's of any help. :)

James
John
Edward
Mary
Agnes
Susan
Angeline
Flora
Margaret
Emma

Could this be his marriage

I do believe it is them!  And I assume "Jos." is short for Joshua?

Durham Records online have the following baptism record:

1815 - Robert Dawson - Butterknowle

You'd need to buy a few credits for further information but the free index is pretty useful if you just want to confirm what you've already got

http://www.durhamrecordsonline.com/NewSearch.php

I'll check it out, thanks!!!

edit:  Found another little piece that may help with census without having to pay.  Thank you very much!

Hello!
I was just going through my family history, making sure I have all of the correct information, and started looking at this specific ancestor, and I cannot find any information on him in the birth county/town that my family member listed.

I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me out, maybe some lookups or such.

Robert Dawson
b. 31 Jul 1815 in  Butterknowle, Durham, England
d. 6 Oct 1893 in  Craigs Hollow, Iowa, United States

Wife:
Isabella Alma Peart
b. 20 Apr 1816 Durham
d. 1 Dec 1894 Craigs Hollow

I believe they came to the US in early 1857, since one of their children passed away in the "Atlantic Ocean"

All but two of their children were also born in England (Durham according to family paperwork):
Ellen (died in infancy 1838)
Joseph (1839)
Joshua (1841)
Ellen (1842)
Jeremiah (1845)
Jurrey (1846)
George William (1848)
John (1851, died at age 3)
Elizabeth (1854, a twin, died in infancy)
Hannah (1854, a twin, died in infancy)
Thomas (1856, d. Atlantic Ocean)

Born in the US:
Elizabeth (1858)
Mary (1861)

Any information I can get to help me make sure this is correct, and be able to go back even further would be greatly appreciated!
   Thanks!

I read through the site you posted, didn't see anything on my ancestors, but it was an interesting read!

I am sending out my request for information to the Foothills Gen. Soc. tomorrow.  Crossing my fingers that they can find some information for me, and hopefully a death cert.!  ;D

His children were:
James (Iowa)
John (Iowa)
Edward (Denver)
Mary (Denver)
Agnes (Denver)
Susan (Denver)
Angeline (Boulder)
Flora (Boulder)
Margaret (unk. CO)
Emma (unk. CO)

So it could be possible that they are relations of his in Boulder!  It is so nice to have a new set of eyes to look at this stuff!

I am not 100% sure Susan's (the mother) last name was McGinn, that is just the name on the family papers I received.  She passed away (1877) before they moved to Boulder, so she wouldn't be on that census.

I have seen a couple items where is was spelled McDonnald, but that sometimes happens with the census, I have found. ;)

I am writing to the Foothills Gen. Soc., tonight, and sending off my check so they can gather and send back (hopefully) whatever information they have on James.

I sincerely appreciate your time in helping me!!!

Have you looked through the Foothills Genealogical Society website?

http://foothillsgenealogy.org/cpage.php?pt=24

Maybe there is something there that will help.  In the link to Boyer Funeral Home, it mentions the "Estate of James McDonald" in Oct. of 1908.  I haven't looked through it all, but there may be something there that will help.

Thank you VERY much for this!  I do think that is him on there, as I found his daughter listed right below him, and the date is correct.  I think I will be writing to them and getting copies of the records they have found.
   Thank you again!

Hi Darby:

Welcome to RootsChat.

I've not been able to find anything for you, but I wonder if this is just coincidental, or if there is some connection?

Selected US Fed Census Non-Population Schedule, Sioux City, Woodbury Co., Iowa - 1 June 1860
Jas McDonald, "Taylor". Listed right above James is
Jas Hutchins, "Taylor"

"Past and present of Sioux City and Woodbury County, Iowa"
James Hutchins was mentioned.  Mr. Hutchins was born 19 November 1831 in Bath, Somersetshire, England...when he was 11 years old he began to learn the tailor's trade.  At the age of 19, he left England and arrived in New York City in 1851.

Was it just coincidence that the men were listed next to each other on the Sioux City census, or could they have met on board a ship and eventually settled in the same town?   ???

Thanks a bunch!  I bet if I look up ship manifests, it might be easier to locate James now, that he seems to have found a friend on board, as well as a port of entry!  James was in Iowa before he moved to Colorado.  I have some digging to do, thanks again!
