Well, if everything else fits it probably is her. Ann Macdonald or Salmond wouldn't be the first person to get her grandparents' names wrong.

Are there any other records of a Ramsay/Yule couple? Could they be Anne Macdonald or Salmond's great-grandparents?

Helen Yule and William Ramsay married in Dysart in 1837, William may have been the brother to James Ramsay but not sure...

have you eliminated this one? If the informant got the mother's maiden name wrong, it could be her. Age is consistent with the 1871 census.

Hmm...

Good spot, yes it appears to be, the occupation is jute preparer which is consistent and the witness to the death is her daughter Ann Salmond, my great great grandmother. She is also listed as widow of James MacDonald, all good there

However, her parents names are different. They are listed as William Ramsay and Ann Yule. So did Ann Low go on to marry a Yule and is William Ramsay simply just a mix up of names?

I'm revisiting this part of my family tree after coming back from Dundee, wondering if I can fill in another gap or two.

I'm still missing the 1891 census for daughter Ann MacDonald, wife of James MacDonald who died in 1883 and also her death record.

I know she was living as of the 1901 census, with only one daughter Margaret in Arbroath, and was still alive as of Margaret's marriage in 1908. She appears to be living on the same street as Margaret in 1911 also (North Street Dundee) but had died by 1922 when Margaret married a second time. I have eliminated several death records as not her.

If the older Ann was illegitimate, then perhaps I should be looking for deaths under the name Ann Low rather than Ann Ramsay? I really don't know!

Margaret MacDonald, daughter of James MacDonald and Ann Ramsay, died in Dundee in 1938 aged 55.

Her first marriage was in 1908 in Arbroath to James Taylor. Her name is indexed as Maggie.

Her second marriage was in 1922 in Dundee to Charles Ferrie.

There are three Taylor children with mother Macdonald born in Dundee between 1908 and 1922: John, 1910; Henrietta Bell, 1912; and James Patrick 1913.

No sign of any Duncans, either given name or surname.

Ah thanks for this information, it looks like the Duncan connection may be a generation further down with Henrietta marrying a James Duncan in 1939.

I have recently received a copy of some handwritten notes that were taken by a relative, likely in the early 2000s, who is no longer around.

In those notes there is a reference to our 2x great aunt Margaret MacDonald, born 1883 in Arbroath marrying a man by the name Duncan (not sure if a first or last name) who was a contractor on Blackness Road. They apparently had children Rita, James and John but I can find no record of a marriage or these children.

Margaret was the daughter of James MacDonald and Ann Ramsay. Her sister Annie Macdonald was my ancestor.

From the census that Neale1961 has found, it looks as if Andrew Ogilvie was Ann Bowman or Mitchell's illegitimate son.

1891 Census, Rutherglen: Andrew Ogilvie, 38, born Forfar; wife Eliza, 36, born Forfar; William, 11; Ann, 8; Margaret, 4; all born Lanarkshire.

Ogilvie births in Rutherglen, mother's maiden name Findlay: William Findlay, 1789; Ann Bowman, 1882; Margaret Findlay, 1886.

Therefore Andrew Ogilvie's wife was Elizabeth Findlay, not Elizabeth Ogilvie.

Andrew Ogilvie and Elizabeth Findlay were married in Forfar in 1878.

I suggest that you get their marriage certificate from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and tell us exactly what it says are the names of Andrew Ogilvie's parents.

Parents of Andrew Ogilvie on his marriage certificate:

Andrew Ogilvie, Cattleman
Ann Bowman, linen weaver, married to James Petrie, Joiner

This is consistent with the parents listed on his death certificate.

Andrew Ogilvie was Ann’s step-son, not her son

What makes you think that? She is listed as his mother on Andrew Ogilvie's death certificate.

Please answer the question fully regarding her parents.

James Bowman, think it says general labourer, and Elisabeth Joe. I would attach the full certificate but I'm on mobile at the moment so can't, sorry.

Ann Bowman married James Petrie in 1867 Forfar
What information does the marriage cert, give about her and her parents?

It describes her as widow to John Mitchell, farmer, but makes no mention of another husband Andrew Ogilvie.
